Another thing is that from those 160.636.885 units manufactured during those long 13 years, it's hard to believe that less than 636.886 were used for testing, for marketing purposes, as replacement, or was just straight up discarded due to manufacturing errors.

But then again. Out of all possible months and years from 2013 until end of 2024, they will choose exactly the moment when it was clear that Switch has a real chance, and indeed passed the 155M number. Let's say you are right, and this might be indeed be the real reason. Why not announce that milestone in let's say 2015, when PS3 was behind them ? Why not announce it in 2017 ? why not announce it in 2019 when there was 25 year anniversary of the Playstation ? And when they announced then the 500M sold units, and with that they also updated their PS3 numbers to 87.4M? Why not in any other possible moment between than and 2024 ? The whole thing is very suspicious. And with my previous post, I am not saying it's 100% impossible for them to really have reached 160M. I just say it's not likely given those circumstances, and also no explanation has been given about all of this .. Anyway, one thing is for sure, Switch needs to reach and pass 160M, in order to be the undisputed best selling console .. or maybe 160.1M to shut almost all of the resistance, on the PS2 side (some small portion will still be there keeping to the produced 160.63M number).. unless Sony be a "man" and come out and say " this is the shipment number, this is the number of repair units, by that date ". Really, there was other way, if they so much want the number 1 spot for sales. They could be a real "man" and simply put all their powers and money into the PS5, and make it pass through the 160M. Eat all the loses, and in 2025 instead of increasing the prices 3 times, they could say " No! We won't go that way, we will stick to the old tradition console way, no matter what is the cost, we will eat it all, in order to sell as much as possible, and keep the tradition console lifecycle, and screw the economy" and drop the original launch price by 100$, and then drop it by another 100$ in let's say 2027. Yes it's not very smart, given the bigger expenses than any other time, but this is the way you earn respect, not by inflating some 15 years old numbers from the dead corpse.. Cuz honestly, given how well PS5 is doing, and how is almost on par with the PS4, with 3 price hikes, and generation without true games for it (almost all are cross gen), if we took out the price hikes 130M are the floor. And if we put 2 price cuts the way it should've been, and releasing a successor in 2028, giving PS5 8 years as a major console, 160M would be a real possibility for it. And this was the way Sony should've gone if their 1st place for sales is so precious .. not with the way they actually went. |
Yes, you're right, there were enough venues in the past where Sony could have celebrated the 160mil. milestone.
Bye the way, if Sony wouldn't have been forced to cut the legs of the PS4 (because of the shortages of components during Covid-19), I personally think it could have reached 138mil. with an optimal outcome of reaching and even surpassing the 140mil. mark.

For sure. And if their 1st place for sales was so much important to them, they might have tried with the PS4 also. They could've cut it's price once more to 199$ in let's say 2020, and even once more to 149$ in 2022, and have it in production up until now or even next year (which would be about the same as PS2), and with the recent economic situations, and having in mind that there are still many cross gen games, it would be one nice budget choice, and if the sales were decent after 2020, they could also have a shot at 160M. With the price raising on all console the last 2 years, PS4 would sell decently at that 149$ now. Despite how big or small it's chances would be in such scenario, this is the way Sony should've tried to do it, with either PS4 or PS5.

They probably never even hit 160 million shipped. They released a press release when they hit 150 million, but declined to have one for 160 million? Then when the Switch is starting to get within reaching distance they release this so-called "production number" ... puh-lease. Who really is buying that.
They would have made a press release if they actually hit 160 mill when it happened, they didn't because it never happened.
They never shipped 160 million to begin with, plain and simple. Probably at least a million units fall into that testing/marketing/kiosk/replacement/defective unit category at least, I would bet they fizzled around somewhere around 157-159 million and never got to a real shipment total of 160 mill. If they had, they would have said so a lot earlier, when Switch started to look like it would overtake that number then they scrambled for a "production total" number that inflates their unit total over 160 mill even though they never shipped/sold that total at all.

Same applies for the switch then?
Some people in here are really trying to cope with the fact their favorite plastic box is maybe not gonne outsell a 25 year old plastic box.
Even if it happens what will happen? Will the legacy of the ps2 be wiped away?
Snes is one of the greatest game consoles of all time and didnt even sell 50mill.
Ps5 is making more money then any console has ever done and most of the gamez fucking suckk monkey balls.
Maybe iam getting old(almost40) but i really don't give a shit which box sells the most anymore.
Both ps2 and switch are massive unheared of succeses for their time.
And the way things are going,we will never see it ever again. Be gratefull we where a part of this era in gaming....

I don't think so, because Nintendo's number is actual shipments to retailers, afaik.

So in reality ninty already manufactored more then 160mill then.
Great ps2 has been detrowned.. end of story.
And come on even in France the PS2 sits at 5,9 million units. And in all of countries from west Europe the Nintendo DS is the best selling consoles of all time. So call me crazy but I feel like the PS2 never sold 160 million and is maybe sitting at 157-159 million units
