Looking at Nintendo's track record they don't seem to keep production of their previous consoles for more than a year or so after the release of their new console, so if they were to follow suit, then the original Switch doesn't have much time left, and all that remains are the ones that are left in stock.

Do we have a rough idea of how many Switch/Switch Lites are still in stores?

(Super) Famicom would disagree with that. Both produced till September 2003

Picking at straws are we?

Your counter point is naming the very first 2 Japan-only Nintendo consoles (because NES/Super was produced shorter to the rest of the world), and you also decided to skip the next 4 generations before the Switch that had shorter life span.

Well I didn't make the argument that Nintendo does not produce legacy consoles a year into their successor.

I counter argument with facts. It's simple. You can ignore facts off course, it's a free world.

They should continue to sell if for another 4-5 years.

Like looking at 5/6 year old ... a Switch 2 is massively overkill for a kid in that age range, what do they need a system that expensive for with graphics that high end with $70+ games.

Switch 1 makes a lot more sense for young gamers getting their first dedicated gaming hardware and then as they get older they can graduate up into the Switch 2.

Switch 1 should be $249.99 and the Lite should be $179.99, and games should be $39.99-$49.99 a pop digital ... it would easily hit 160 with no fuss.

Looking at Nintendo's track record they don't seem to keep production of their previous consoles for more than a year or so after the release of their new console, so if they were to follow suit, then the original Switch doesn't have much time left, and all that remains are the ones that are left in stock.

But it would be stupid to stop producing their entry-level handheld Switch Lite (affordable, easier to hold for younger kids with small hands) before they can offer a similar sized handheld version of the Switch 2. Then they lose a whole consumer segment until they can offer a "Switch 2 Lite".

And with the current RAM crisis it can take longer than expected until they put 12 GB RAM into a $249 - $299 "Switch 2 Lite" instead of putting the same amount of RAM into a $499 Switch 2.

NSL is not going anywhere anytime soon. NS1 will most likely be produced into 2030. Last quarter is sold 670k systems, not to mention a ton of software. Not everyone can afford to drop $500+ for a new system. NS1 and especially the lite version have a market and still will for the next few years.

Exactly this.

We can't simply look at Nintendo's past track record regarding production with any degree of accuracy when the current market conditions are so radically different than they've ever been before.  The Switch Lite is in a class all by itself as far as affordability, even at $229.  And unlike the DS or 3DS, the Switch is making a lot more money, getting a lot more games (thanks to indies/smaller titles) and can be used as a gateway system into the "Switch" ecosystem.  I fully expect Switch Lite to remain in production after the other two Switch models have been discontinued, functioning no different than a traditional Nintendo handheld.

It is quite likely that Nintendo will at least reach its 2m goal for this fiscal year with Switch - compare that with the DS' year aligned at about 30k.  Very different circumstances when you consider how much longer Nintendo could run with the Switch Lite for the next few years of the RAM crisis.

I've said it before, it could easily hit 160m, there's not really even much of a debate about that ... the demand is there, it's just a bunch of phony nonsense like EU regulations and stuff like that.

If I'm a parent with young kids who where money isn't flowing out of the faucets ... like I would totally buy my kids a Switch 1 or Switch 1 Lite today as their first console. Why would I spend in the $600 range on a Switch 2 or PS5 are you nuts, no young kid who's just getting their first game console needs that much horsepower anyway. Things like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Smash Bros, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 3, Luigi's Mansion 3 are still perfectly able to provide any kid with hundreds of hours of top end entertainment and BOTW/TOTK are totally epic for like a 7 or 8 year old who's friends are playing Roblox or some crap and they play and even still look more than fine. The Switch also has plenty of good 3rd party games if a kid wants to dip their toes into that pool.

Every now and then, I check Sony's Business Data & Sales homepage:

https://sonyinteractive.com/en/our-company/business-data-sales/

They updated the PS5 sales figure as of June 30, 2026, and it now says More than 95 million.

While looking at the page, I also noticed that they made a change to the PS2 figure. It now says More than 160 million. Previously, it said More than 160.0 million. This can be verified using the Wayback Machine:

https://sonyinteractive.com/en/our-company/business-data-sales/">https://web.archive.org/web/20260115004002/https://sonyinteractive.com/en/our-company/business-data-sales/

The change was made sometime after January 15, 2026.

It has to be said quite clearly that Sony is being truly childish and pathetic here and apparently desperately wants to keep this record. Someone at Sony had to manually make this change. And yet, they left the obvious error in As of March 31, 2012 untouched, even though As of March 31, 2013 would be correct.

The reasoning behind the correction is obvious: Sony apparently panicked because the Switch might still overtake the PS2, so they further obscured their own reported PS2 sales figure. With More than 160.0 million, it is clear that fewer than 160.1 million PS2s were sold. However, by displaying the figure as More than 160 million, without a decimal place, it becomes unclear how far above 160 million the actual figure could be.

For someone who is not familiar with the details, the theoretical range could therefore be anywhere from 160 million + 1 all the way up to 161.8 million — the absolute theoretical maximum based on the figures we have, assuming that not a single PS3 was shipped during a particular period when Sony was combining the PS2 and PS3 sales figures.

However, by making this change, Sony also proves that the actual sales figure is indeed around 160.0 million, meaning that definitely fewer than 160.1 million units were sold. Otherwise, Sony would have had no reason to make this change.

Sony is simply a shabby company. There is no other way to put it! If the situation were reversed and Nintendo were using the exact same trick in the way it presented the numbers, I would say exactly the same thing about Nintendo. This kind of behavior is simply ridiculous!

They should also fix that PSP number to 82.5M as of March 2014 or 2015. Is it so hard .. and why not giving the data about the Vita ? Okay it was a failure, but that is a long way behind them now, it's not relevant anymore. Give all your data. The same for the PS4 software figures.. and PS5 ones.

It would be even better if they rounded to the nearest 10,000 unit for everything like Nintendo does.

Oh, what a surprise that a random web page has no commitment with the truth and can be just changed at willy-nilly. I called this out back then, that is not official sales figure, it's a random web page put out by a marketing team.
