sure, its 160 because they said that is what it is. but also we still have to guess, because again, this number/announcement is the most ambiguous it could have possibly been. we still don't know for sure exactly what the number is.

i understand 160 is the number we have to go by, but that doesn't make it true that this is the amount that was actually sold to customers. we just have to go by this because of the race we are currently in.

When you think about it, Switch may already be above the PS2 by sometime next year, when it's at ~158M but we won't know, and in reality Switch may be #1 while at the same time, everyone thinks it's still #2 because the number is 160M, while in reality the true sold to consumers units may for example be 158.3M of the PS2, and Switch may hit 158.5M sometime next year.

I suspect after 155mill they never said anything about it even thou we all know ps2 was stil being made/sold. So we always had to somehow "guess"  now sony said 160mill, soo 160 it is.

Think positively! When Sony stopped counting PS2 numbers they were down to 600k shipped. They never announced a number lower than that, but they still had a whole nother fiscal year of sales. Nintendo already announced 550k shipped for the Switch. So they should at least have another FY of sales. The most funny thing for Nintendo to do at this point would be to combine Switch and Switch 2 numbers and then claim 161m for Switch.

Either way if Sony lied about PS2 numbers, then they also lied about PS3 numbers, and they lied to investors about the PS3 being down YoY. Now that would make the news!

Imagine the Switch 2's sales going down so hard (due to the price hike) that Nintendo pulls out a Sony and does exactly that, combining SW1's and SW2's sales numbers to deceive the investors.

Funny to picture this, although the likelihood of it happening being minimal. They were crystal clear when it came to the Wii U's sales, so they wouldn't do this now

I will put here two quotes, from one very old thread about the PS2. According to that PS2 should've shipped around 1M units for the first quarter of FY 2013, and also there is that guy that says the forecast is 3M until March 2013, which would put PS2 at 158.1M. Of course it's possible to be surpassed in the end, but this was the forecast according to him. I couldn't find official info on the web however ..

What really happened after that? Shock, horror. Sony shipped more units! As of March 2012, the PS2 had shifted 155.1 Million units Worldwide.

It gets worse. In the April-June Quarter of 2012, the PS2 shipped an additional 1 to 1.1 Million units. How can we know this? From Sonys own statements. Sony said the PS3 and PS2 shipped a combined 2.8 Million for the Quarter. We also know that PS3 was down YoY in said Quarter (It shipped 1.8 Million in the same 2011 Q). That leaves a minimum of 1 Million PS2s shipped in the Quarter, taking the total PS2 shipments to a minimum of 156.1 Million units Worldwide. More will have been shipped since, and considering that Sony shipped 1.6-1.7 Million units in Q1/Q2, its safe to say that the PS2 will have steadily gone by the 157 Million mark.

A few notes:

  1. There are variables whose impacts we don't know yet (India/Indonesia release, the cutting of official supplies to Europe)
  2. We really only have a single year over year quarter since the Switch 2 released, and even that isn't a full post-Switch 2 release quarter.

But, right now, the year over year quarterly decline is about 0.68, which if calculated for quarterly declines predict Switch passing 160 million in autumn next year, and will go on to sell ~163 million by 2031 (5 years from now).

But the picture will become clearer by February or May 2027 for how much the Switch will ultimately sell (as that will include a quarter and change of Oceanian/South Asian sales... They might be negligible, they might be a few million. This is applying a decay constant of 0.68... (whatever Q2-2026/Q2-2025 works out to). So, a very narrow data set to predict the future. A full second year of Switch 2 would be better.
