Every now and then, I check Sony's Business Data & Sales homepage:

https://sonyinteractive.com/en/our-company/business-data-sales/

They updated the PS5 sales figure as of June 30, 2026, and it now says More than 95 million.

While looking at the page, I also noticed that they made a change to the PS2 figure. It now says More than 160 million. Previously, it said More than 160.0 million. This can be verified using the Wayback Machine:

https://sonyinteractive.com/en/our-company/business-data-sales/">https://web.archive.org/web/20260115004002/https://sonyinteractive.com/en/our-company/business-data-sales/

The change was made sometime after January 15, 2026.

It has to be said quite clearly that Sony is being truly childish and pathetic here and apparently desperately wants to keep this record. Someone at Sony had to manually make this change. And yet, they left the obvious error in As of March 31, 2012 untouched, even though As of March 31, 2013 would be correct.

The reasoning behind the correction is obvious: Sony apparently panicked because the Switch might still overtake the PS2, so they further obscured their own reported PS2 sales figure. With More than 160.0 million, it is clear that fewer than 160.1 million PS2s were sold. However, by displaying the figure as More than 160 million, without a decimal place, it becomes unclear how far above 160 million the actual figure could be.

For someone who is not familiar with the details, the theoretical range could therefore be anywhere from 160 million + 1 all the way up to 161.8 million — the absolute theoretical maximum based on the figures we have, assuming that not a single PS3 was shipped during a particular period when Sony was combining the PS2 and PS3 sales figures.

However, by making this change, Sony also proves that the actual sales figure is indeed around 160.0 million, meaning that definitely fewer than 160.1 million units were sold. Otherwise, Sony would have had no reason to make this change.

Sony is simply a shabby company. There is no other way to put it! If the situation were reversed and Nintendo were using the exact same trick in the way it presented the numbers, I would say exactly the same thing about Nintendo. This kind of behavior is simply ridiculous!

Damn... I can't believe they went so low like this. I've never truly meant it when I used to say Sony was raising PS2's numbers just because the Switch was getting close to reaching it, but them getting out of their way to go to the official site just to stealthly remove the ".0" after the 160 can't mean anything different from that. They are really afraid to lose their #1 place on the podium of hardware sales. I bet they didn't realize the ".0" could imply they sold less than 160.1 million units of PS2 when they revealed this number some time ago. At least, as you said, it is clear now that the real number is indeed less than 160.1 million

I honestly do not care which console is #1, it's all fun, but for the sake of transparency i hope the switch manages to get it

To be honest. I don't think the PS2 ever passed 160 million. The last independently verified data Sony gave was 155.1 million and that was their official total on their website for close to a decade. Now I know PS2's were still being sold after that earnings report for another year but I do doubt they ever reach 160m themselves.

I don't know if anyone else took much notice of when Sony updated their Webpage to say the PS2 had 160.0m in sales the first time. But when they updated the figure they added an asterisk saying they used sale figures in a different way to how they measured their other consoles.

Personally I think they came up short. Probably still in the range of 158m to high 159m. But definitely some creative accounting to hit their supposed figure.

Even though I could be totally indifferent, reading this now actually makes me root for the Switch to beyond the shadow of a doubt take the record home! Even though I will say that I always felt counting the Lite sales towards what otherwise is considered a home console felt like "cheating"; but here the question is which system has sold most and there it does not matter because the Lite obviously is part of the Switch 1 system family. Now go for at least 161 million, little Switch and settle this once and for all!

Sony be changing the web page by 2030 to say "16X million"

Or if they put at least i tiny bit of effort into it beyond statistics cosmetics bring out a "PS2 mini" / "PS2 Classic" emulation plug and play box and argue "if the Lite counts towards the Switch family, then the PS2 mini also counts towards the PS2 family sales".

The high ground of ps2 it´s produced.

Nintendo Switch was sell-in.

Big diference

I personally would agree that PS2 didn't reached 160M sell to units (to end consumer), but not because all of the reasons that are given here (not that they are not viable, but they are a little bit disputed), but because of 1 main thing. I just can't see and imagine how for example in late 2012 or early 2013, PS2 reaches 160M sold to consumers, and Sony didn't ring the bell right then and there. This is the most sus thing for me.

Yes, that was always the common argument here on VGChartz: if the PS2 had reached the 160 million mark, Sony would have communicated it. Therefore, we assumed that the definitive final number had to be below 160 million.

On the other hand, you could naturally also argue that at that point in time—with the successor's successor, the PS4, coming to market soon—the PS2 simply wasn't relevant enough anymore for such a press release, or that it might have cast a poor light on the much slower-selling PS3.

For me, the decisive factor is also what exactly Sony counts as sell-in for the PS2. That could be the reason why the PS2 might not have actually shipped 160 million units to the market.

But then again. Out of all possible months and years from 2013 until end of 2024, they will choose exactly the moment when it was clear that Switch has a real chance, and indeed passed the 155M number. Let's say you are right, and this might be indeed be the real reason. Why not announce that milestone in let's say 2015, when PS3 was behind them ? Why not announce it in 2017 ? why not announce it in 2019 when there was 25 year anniversary of the Playstation ? And when they announced then the 500M sold units, and with that they also updated their PS3 numbers to 87.4M? Why not in any other possible moment between than and 2024 ? The whole thing is very suspicious. And with my previous post, I am not saying it's 100% impossible for them to really have reached 160M. I just say it's not likely given those circumstances, and also no explanation has been given about all of this .. Anyway, one thing is for sure, Switch needs to reach and pass 160M, in order to be the undisputed best selling console .. or maybe 160.1M to shut almost all of the resistance, on the PS2 side (some small portion will still be there keeping to the produced 160.63M number).. unless Sony be a "man" and come out and say " this is the shipment number, this is the number of repair units, by that date ". Really, there was other way, if they so much want the number 1 spot for sales. They could be a real "man" and simply put all their powers and money into the PS5, and make it pass through the 160M. Eat all the loses, and in 2025 instead of increasing the prices 3 times, they could say " No! We won't go that way, we will stick to the old tradition console way, no matter what is the cost, we will eat it all, in order to sell as much as possible, and keep the tradition console lifecycle, and screw the economy" and drop the original launch price by 100$, and then drop it by another 100$ in let's say 2027. Yes it's not very smart, given the bigger expenses than any other time, but this is the way you earn respect, not by inflating some 15 years old numbers from the dead corpse..

Cuz honestly, given how well PS5 is doing, and how is almost on par with the PS4, with 3 price hikes, and generation without true games for it (almost all are cross gen), if we took out the price hikes 130M are the floor. And if we put 2 price cuts the way it should've been, and releasing a successor in 2028, giving PS5 8 years as a major console, 160M would be a real possibility for it. And this was the way Sony should've gone if their 1st place for sales is so precious .. not with the way they actually went.
