State of the market

February 2021 consumer spending across video game hardware, content and accessories reached a February record $4.6B35 percent higher when compared to a year ago. Year-to-date spending totaled $9.3B39 percent higher than the same period in 2020.

Monthly sales of video game hardware increased 121% when compared to February 2020, to $406M. This is the highest total for a February month since the $468M reached in February 2011. YTD HW spending totaled $725M, an increase of 130% compared to a year ago.

Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform in both units and dollars in February. Unit and dollar sales of Nintendo Switch hardware in February were the highest for any hardware platform in a February month since the Nintendo Wii in Feburary 2009.

Total lifetime dollar sales of Switch hardware now exceed the Nintendo DS, making Switch Nintendo's 2nd best-selling platform in U.S. tracked history (Nintendo Wii ranks first). Switch is currently the 7th best-selling hardware platform in lifetime U.S. dollar sales.

PlayStation 5 ranked as the 2nd best-selling hardware platform in February in both unit and dollar sales. PlayStation 5 is currently the fastest selling hardware platform in U.S. history (total dollar sales after 4 months in market).

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury debuts as the best-selling game of February. The title also ranks as the 2nd best-selling game of 2021 year-to-date, despite the lack of digital sales tracking for Nintendo published titles.

Little Nighmares II launched as the 6th best-selling game of February. Little Nightmares II ranked as the 5th best-selling game on Xbox platforms, while placing 10th on PlayStation.

PS5 second place with limited stock in USA is amazing, Brand power in Playstation is scary, Microsoft with lmited stock and selling great, I think these 2 need to stock above 25 million a year and 20 million a year respectively.

Cute and honest Sega Saturn fan, also noone should buy Sega grrrr, Sega for life.

I just hope Nintendo maintains momentum. Nintendo is going to need some heavy hitters throughout the second half of the year.

A bit surprised Little Nightmares II managed to make such a good debut for what's considered a "niche" horror-platformer game in the US. Even managed to top in the Xbox charts ...

Also was there no charts specific for the Switch ?

Switch Friend Code : 3905-6122-2909

3D World took the top spot without any digital sales included. That is fairly impressive. Also 613k-753k for Switch is hella impressive, even on the low end.

Interesting to see Persona 5 Strikers on 3rd place despite charting only for PS.

Let's hope we get more leak for PS5 and XBS.

If we do some math, we could get a top-end for PS5, Switch sells 70/30 in favor of the Hybrid so that's a $270 average so Switch revenue would be between $165.5m and $203.3m. If we take a 25/75 ratio for PS5, that's an average price of 475$ which would mean the PS5 top range would be 348k to 428k.

Does that make sense?

Well, there’s no Switch list in the OP.

It’s probably #2 or #3 on that list behind Bowser’s Fury and Bravely Default 2.

NSW is building a nice cushion against 2020 numbers.

Let’s go Nintendo! Beat Nintendo again!
