I think Switch 1 is sold out in Japan
With this big May month for Switch 2 sales in Japan, it seems certain that after 1 year on the market, the biggest single market for Switch 2 will have been Japan, and what makes it even more crazy is that its not like Switch 2 underperformed in the US, just that Japanese sales have been incredibly impressive during the past 12 months.
Basically, the first 12 months for Switch 2 would have entirely different major market performances compared to PS5. PS5 first 12 months: Total western domination, while for Switch 2 its: 1: Japan. 2: US. 3: Europe.

I think it illustrates how weak PS identity and position is in Japan that Xbox series managed to take some market share from PS5 while it mostly declined massively everywhere else. The fact that Xbox series have mostly the same big Japanese third party games as PS5 while also having gamepass was probably all it took for them to gain market share from PS5 in Japan, which shows the danger of being dependant on third party games for the popularity of your ecosystem.

Wasn't a huge part of that just the PS5 shortages in the early years? I think people forgot that the PS5 was sometimes selling 2-3k a week during its first 2 years.
The growth in Japan being at odds with the rest of the world (40% is huge btw) isn't likely to be explained away with gamepass if the same results weren't seen in way bigger Xbox markets. Exports to elsewhere in Asia probably play a big role too alongside the difficulties in finding PS5 hardware for the first 2 years which was worst in Japan and Spain (where Switch also grew massively/maybe partially as a consequence of shortages)

For every PS5 sold this week, 28.6 Switch 2s sold.
Xbox Series also cracks 700k; actually quite decent for an Xbox in Japan, second only to 360 and nearly 6 times Xbox One.

Japan, the one major place the Xbox Series outperformed the Xbox One. Mainly because the Xbox One was dead on arrival there.

Yeah, Xbox One couldn't have done worse in Japan if they tried. It's a shame that Microsoft blew it with the Series. The smaller, compact design and cheaper price of the Series S might have performed (relatively) decent if Microsoft had just given people any reason to want an Xbox.
OT - Switch 2 performs other-worldly for one more week... but seeing Switch 1 sales drop to PS5 territory so quickly is truly disheartening.
For the Xbox Series something is FH6 seems to have had basically no impact on its sales so people there must be primarily playing it on PC.
