Did Switch 2 cannibalize Switch 1 this week? Crazy drop

My guess is that Nintendo doesn’t want to sell NS1 systems at the pre-hike price since its not in their best interest ATM to expand the NS1 ecosystem. Likely bottlenecked supply.

Pretty much this! Well said! Nintendo left it scarce obviously and they will replenish it under the new price tag (sadly).

Also, Good question @PortisheadBiscuit

Also: Does anybody know how Mysterious Book's debut compares to previous Yoshi games? I'd imagine the price discrepency between digital and physical probably won't do this latest release any good given Famitsu is retail.

First Week Japan Sales for Yoshi Games:

Yoshi's Island DS (DS) - 255K

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES) - 149k

Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island (GBA) - 96k

Yoshi's New Island (3DS) - 66k

Yoshi's Story (N64) - 53k

Poochy and Yoshi's Wooly World (3DS) - 53k

Yoshi Touch & Go (DS) - 52k

Yoshi's Crafted World (switch) - 50k

Yoshi's Woolly World (WiiU) - 34k

Basically Yoshi's Island, it's GBA port and it's sequel on DS are the popular ones. Yoshi isn't a big seller.

Switch 2 hardware sales are up WoW, which is crazy.  We very well may be looking at Switch 2's best week of the year.  Not only do these sales look like a good week in December, but December sales this year are going to be affected by the price increase.

Meanwhile, two new titles release into the top 10 this week, and Tomodachi does not care.  When people buy these Switch 2's it looks like the main game they are buying is Tomodachi, a Switch 1 game, with Pokopia being the 2nd choice.  It will be interesting to see what happens to software sales of these two games after the price increase happens for Switch 2.

Yoshi FW Comparison:

  • Island DS (DS) - 254,523
  • New Island (3DS) - 66,225
  • Woolly World (3DS) - 52,758
  • Touch & Go (DS) - 52,407
  • Crafted World (NS) - 50,007
  • Mysterious Book (NS2) - 39,661
  • Woolly World (Wii U) - 33,821

I'm not especially impressed, even accounting for Digital sales.

Taking into account Yoshi Crafted World will have had a higher switch installbase, and the digital ratio for Mysterious Book is likely higher. I'd say it's a better performance than the previous game, but yeah it's just not a big title or franchise bar the Island titles.

Pretty impressive start TBH. Especially coming off the disaster that was MTFever (and for being $70USD at retail), Yoshi seems to be tracking along quite well with all other entries.

Yoshi was one of few first party Nintendo franchises that didn't get the famous Switch boost in Japan, so it wasn't likely to perform that well on Switch 2 as well. I imagine they still make Yoshi games because the budget is so low that even just 2M lifetime sales still nets them good profits from these games.
