Im sure youre thrilled with the prospect of switch selling 160 million. Im sure youre even rooting for it.

Have you ever seem me wishing for it to bomb and not reach those numbers?

There is a very big difference to how you approch your prefferences and I do mine.

You think me hoping that the ps5 misses 100 million is equivalent to me hoping it bombs? Ive never once hoped any console bombs besides the xbox one, and i think the circumstances there are understandable.

And you basically just proved my point. You obviously want to switch to fall short of 160 million. I dont blame you, thats completely rational.

PS5 is at around 95M, not reaching 100M would 100% mean it bombs insanely from now on.

Also, your "logic" is really something else.

But don't worry, you post what you post, even if it somehow isn't just for fun but actually serious, it still is how it is, no point taking it seriously either way.

Seeing the latest figures, I'm honestly expecting it to surpass the PS1, but not get anywhere close to the PS4.

Shame too. PS5 had a pretty decent chance until how the last year and a half has played out. And for the most part, not out of any wrongdoing by Sony either.

Pretty much what I am expecting. Sony only shipped 1.5M PS5s from Jan to March 2026. And with the cost of RAM and storage continuing to climb I see them limiting supply. I would be surprised if they even reach 10M PS5s shipped in the current fiscal year. Last year was at 16M. 93.7M have been shipped through March. Probably ~8M in the current fiscal year to bring it to ~101.7M.

Sony really got dealt a bad card to close (and start) the PS5 generation. With the way chip prices and manufacturing costs are shifting, the most recent sales data from VGChartz for May 2026 leads me to believe that PS5 will not surpass 115M. I think 100M is still a lock, but I struggle to see it doing much better than 110M LTD, especially when sales are already below where Switch 1 was last year.

These upcoming few years shouldn’t be centered on hardware, but on software. Sony needs to stick with their PS5 install base as long as they can while also getting started with PS6 before they’ve completely lost all hardware momentum.

So… long cross-generational period seems to be the right call IMO.

To be honest, they could still do it with how the things has played out up until recently with the latest price hike. On the original post you can see bar chart with the sales through the years, and 2025 was still decent with 17.4M and not a big drop off from the year prior of 19.6M. If they could stick with the prices before that last hike, with GTA 6 coming, they could do some 15M this year for sure. Which would lead to PS5 being at almost 105M by year's end. Then another 12-13M for the next year were also like a sure thing, and there you go, 117M by end of 2027. Let alone more after that.

But now with that big drops from the last price hike, only PS1 is likely to be surpassed, not much more after that .. unless some wild card is played like prolonging the generation till 2030, or some old one returns .. like price cut. Or why not both ?

Also @firebush03 I don't know where you get data from, but PS5 is still slightly outperforming Switch 1's last year numbers, both year to date, and monthly. Although if it continues to fall it may not anymore. But for the first 5 months it's ahead. Which is not achievement by itself of course .. Barely beating a console's year where it was replaced is abysmal ..

I've been voting 110-115M since the start of this thread and I'm sticking to it.

I can’t remember what I said in the comment you’re responding to, but looking at the data, it does appear PS5’s May 2026 figures were lower than almost three-quarters of NS1’s 2025 figures (according to VGChartz). My whole point is that NS1 2025 is performing around where PS5 2026 is following their most recent price hike, which would make for an uphill battle to sell upwards of 20M more units over the rest of its lifecycle.

Switch did 2.2M with May included for 2025, PS5 did 2.9M with May included now, and every of it's months for this year are stronger than the corresponding months for Switch for 2025. But overall yes, they are not far. This is close to Switch's sales level in 2025, which is not okay.

As far as future go, I think it's too early to call that, since many things can happen. For example price cut at some time (as unlikely as this is, nothing is impossible), and prolonging the gen till 2030 for example. So I can't comment on that as of now, but my current prediction is 115-120M, although this may end highball or lowball depending on what really happens in the next 4 years.

is it ok to hope playstation fails now?
