Forums - Sony - Nearly 20 years later, how do you feel about the PS3?

Didn't most PS3 games also just boot right into? The ones with mandatory installation usually either took 30 seconds or had the same storage/install reqs as their 360 versions - especially ones that came on multiple discs on Xbox. The UI itself was pretty quick on early PS3 systems (and still is!) but yeah, once they replaced NAND memory with NOR in later fat and slim models it did slow down significantly. Come to think of it it's kinda crazy just in how many aspects these later revisions of the PS3 are worse compared to infamous CECHA/B/C/E. Just don't ever try to download all of the available Gran Turismo patches... unless you've got a year of wait to spare.

I do remember the slim cut out some features like backwards compatibility and Linux IIRC, which made its slogan "it only does everything" kinda ironic.

I ended up getting a slim cos it was all I could find locally when I picked one up again in 2019, but I wish I'd been able to get a fat, if only cos it looks a thousand times cooler haha

Ps4 has a lot,and i say a godly LOT more games then ps3, its not even close.

Doesn't come close to the ps3, in both first party and third party titles, what are you on??

Sony cut BC with the 40GB Phat. While all models play PS1 games, 40GB model cut PS2 BC. Slim mainly removed the flash card ports.

The vast majority of PS3 disc games either need no installation whatsoever or just require like 300mb to 3gb installed instead of the full 20gb+ game.

And yeah, getting all GT5 patches installed was such a pain as a very late PS3 owner (twice, because I convinced a friend buy it before I had a PS3 myself and we got throught it on his PS3 too lol), at least I got GT6 on release so I could download the patches as they were released, but my internet connect was abismall up until 2020 so even that took a while.

I still use my 160GB model for CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, stored music, stored video clips, I don't game on it anymore though. And using a Dualsense wired to use it as my PS3 controllers are all dead. Maybe I'll play Pixeljunk Eden again, mostly for the music which the soundtrack of is also on the ps3. Sometimes I just browse the XMB to see all the little videos play and music from the installed games.

I would instantly buy a newly released PS3 model with SSD drive. You can do it yourself, but I wouldn't mind a smaller form factor, PS2 sized PS3 with 1 Tb SSD and 4K blu-ray playback, upgraded multi media machine.

I think it was Sonys second weakest console after the PS1 but to say that is a bit off cause mine could play PS1 games. I think everything dipped at the launch of PS3 and got back on track fairly quick and only now are we starting to see the crest of the wave, or at least for the last two or three years. I believe now is the worst time for Sony, just making so much worse decisions than even then and since they have no rival now we'll not get an upward ticket like with mid ps3. They'll do themselves into the ground cause Nintendo isn't direct competition and PC only a little so.

It was ungodly slow in 2006 esp when Wii and 360 games generally just booted right up. We had 30 years of games just starting. PS3 comes along and says wait a couple hours.

Yeah I recently downloaded the Left Behind DLC for TLOU as well as Super Stardust HD on my PS3 before the store closes down and holy shit it was slower than treacle flowing uphill in Canada.

Great console, but even by the standard of the time that UI/OS was slow.

We have been spoiled now by SSDs. But even still, 360, PS3, and Wii U OS are so much clunkier than PS4's OS.

PS3 (especially the early phat models with PS2 support) is such a multimedia juggernaut held back (even once you got into the 2010s) by a sluggish OS.
