Forums - Sony - Nearly 20 years later, how do you feel about the PS3?

I generally prefer Japanese games, but PS3 was the exception where I enjoyed western games a little more (out of the limited pool of games that I played). But for my taste and based on my limited experience and the things that I hear from the community, I get the sense that the quality of western AAA games declined in the PS4 generation, whereas Japanese games recovered. Overall I liked PS4 a lot more.

There are metrics that put PS3 ahead, and other metrics that give PS4 the win. It's okay to like one more than the other. Maybe I misunderstood one of your comments, but it sounded like you were downplaying PS4's Japanese games advantage (in quality and quantity) and overestimating PS3's "objective" advantages.

Metacritic gives PS3 the win in "90+" quantities, but critical reception doesn't always align with the consensus. PS5 is destined to beat both and yet many understandably consider it the worst of the three.

I probably enjoyed the Japanese exclusives around the same. I am still grateful for what they gave us on ps4. I never got into the monster hunter series, and wasn't a big fan of the RE  remakes, but i loved games like shadown of colossus remake,(prob my top 5 of all time),  nier automata,  the last guardian, dragon quest 11(another top 5/10) , persona 5, sekiro ( second fav souls game),  elden ring, shenmue collection ( top 10), death stranding ( another goat), kingdom hearts 4

Ps5, is definitely the weakest so far. Having said that, i am not dissatisfied, as i find myself falling behind and a backlog of games growing. Though circumstances are different this gen, i find myself married and working full times and spending alot less time gaming now then i did then.

But speaking in terms of first party exclusives, playstation feels like it's moving at a slower pace than previous generations. If i was still working part time and single, I'd probably be complaining about the lack of exclusives.

Sony seem to think they dont need a steady amount of great exclusives anymore since the ps5 is making them more money then they ever have, heck they make more then nintendo ever have.

Its sad to see sony is slowly getting more anti exclusive their output on the ps2 and ps3 was legendary. I stil remember how hyped i was to play games like killzone2 and uncharted2, also loved warhawk and mag.

Ow well.

Yeah 7th gen was RAM starved, much the same was as the 8th gen was CPU starved.

Still, it is insanely impressive (to me anyway) that they got games like Metal Gear Solid 5, GTA5, Far Cry 4, Battlefield 4, etc running on less than 500MB of available RAM, and with PS3 even more limited by having a split RAM setup with just 256MB for graphics.

Some late PS3/360 games were really impressive indeed.

I remember The Evil Within looking quite good too. Althought I'm quite sure it ran much better on PS4/XOne, but still...

Also Uncharted 3 required unreal levels of sorcery we just don't get these days. Arguably it shouldn't be needed but still

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

A lot of late PS3 stuff was downright black magic in terms of what it squeezed out of the specs; Killzone 3, God of War Ascension, Beyond Two Souls, TLOU, GTA5, MGS5, Battlefield 4, etc.

But yeah, the downside was that it took years for devs to really figure the system out, so for much of its life multiplat performance suffered.

I had a 60GB fat PS3. I didn't really get interested in it until Valkyria Chronicles came out and it started getting RPGs.

It was a remarkable turnaround story. It got great games in its later lifecycle. 2013 was a great year for PS3, with Ni no Kuni, Tales of Xillia, and Dragon's Crown.

That said, mine yellow-lighted some years back and I never bothered to fix or replace it. Almost all of the games it had that i cared about are now on Switch, including VC and Ni no Kuni. So I bought the Switch versions of those games instead. And to be fair, I feel the same way about the 360. I don't feel a need to rebuy either.a PS3 or a 360 since I can play all the games I cared about on my current hardware.

PS3 was the golden generation of gaming for me with the best lineup of exclusives released during its lifetime like:

Uncharted trilogy, Resistance trilogy, Killzone 2 and 3, TLOU, Flower, Journey, LBP 1 and 2, R&C Future games, inFamous 1, 2 and Festival of Blood, Heavenly Sward, Folklore, MGS4, GOW3 and Ascension, Puppeteer, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, GT5 and 6, Tokyo Jungle, Twisted Metal, Rain, Warhawk and Starhawk, PSASBR, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, Modnation Racers and several more!!

The HD collections started on it and brought many awesome games from the PS2 era in stunning HD which i played many of them for the first time since i didn’t game a lot during the PS2 era.

PS3 was the first console i bought myself and kickstarted my official gaming journey. During the 90s and early-mid 2000s i was gaming casually on my family’s NES, Sega Genesis, 3DO, PS1 and PS2.

PS3 had PS Home which was a mind blowing social experience when i first experienced it in 2009 which got me many friends that i still have and i think the UI was and still fast except the PS store when it was updated in 2012.

Supported CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, Flash drives and sticks and i could store all the media i accumulated through the years on it.

The first console for me to have Wifi, operating system, trophies, customisable UI, online gaming, store and communications with friends and plays all sorts of media i had bought or stored on it with the chance to upgrade the storage, which i did from 80GB to 720GB.

Its the fanciest looking console for me (Phat model) and looked and still look very premium with its design and its reflective piano black coating.

It was a dream and i had the best time on it and still do! and created many beautiful memories during my late teens and early 20s.

I still use my PS3 and play new games i bought from Ebay/PS store in 2023-present and i still think its a remarkable machine, even in todays standards and especially during its time.

Yeah will say, the fat PS3 is my personal pick for the coolest looking console of all time, such a sexy beast

The slim models were such a huge downgrade in looks

It looks so futuristic and i will never forgot the first time i laid my eyes on it in a magazine called T3 in 2005 and i immediately gasped and was fully mesmerised! Lol

I agree that the design kept getting worse with later iterations in my opinion but the super slim in particular looked atrocious and cheap AF.

It's the best Bluray player ever, I'll give you that.
