Switch 2, but I think it will be close. Probably no more than a 2m gap.

I think the 16-17m I had in my head for Switch 2 is still going to be correct. But with the price rise for PS5 now, the gap is going to be bigger.

Switch 2 could outsell PS5 by 4m this year.

Around the Network

Even Sony's estimates now believe that the Switch 2 will outsell it and looking at how April went and how May is shaping up to be, I think Sony's predictions are optimistic.

Let's suppose that GTA 6 won't start to significantly interfere with PS5 sales until October, since it launches at the second half of november. And that PS5 sales will have a bump in September due to Wolverine

That leaves us 5 months of PS5 selling around half a million per month if the trend continues to follow April. And May is showing that sales could go even bellow that.

So that leaves us 7 months to sell 12,5 million. Which is possible, but highly unlikely, considering the trend.

Yeah not looking good for PS5, though of course, Switch 2's lineup passed July is still a total mystery, and they won't be selling many consoles with small fry like Yoshi, Starfox, and Fire Emblem.

If Nintendo can pull a system seller or two out of their hat, they should be able to pull off a win.

I wouldn't be surprised if they want to wait given the whole GTA 6. Also, I am sick of people demanding that GTA 6 cost 70 USD when new Nintendo games are already 80 USD.  Bro, I went to go get some Nintendo games yesterday (my main reason for buying a Switch) and its like got damn!  Then you look at games like Starfox going for 50 USD and this does make more sense given the length of the game and what not... and you start to think that maybe if Nintendo wants its new major titles to cost 80 US... maybe it doesn't want to do that when GTA launches especially given that GTA might cost less than Mario Kart. it would be a really bad look.

It's definitely possible but I think it just depends on how big of a splash GTA makes. When you have a genuine phenomenon (like Animal Crossing: New Horizons etc), the true impact stretches well beyond people who were "anticipating" the title and it creates interest in people who are curious what the fuss is about, wanting to feel including in the hype etc. I'm sure we all know a fair few console gamers who are on the fence and haven't upgraded this generation but have a PS4 or Xbox One. I think there's a huge casual market at play.  Of course the game must truly deliver for any of that to pan out and a lot of this won't be known or understood until the game is in the hands of reviewers and consumers/going viral etc (like with Pokopia)

At this point though the impact of GTA shouldn't be seen as something that will give PS5 a chance if its already loosing month by month, the best reasonable prediction is that it will greatly reduce the extent of S2s win, but a complete role reversal seems extremely unlikely. This is all assuming Sony goes heavy with discounts during Fall, if they don't... Well the casuals aren't spending $700 to see what the fuss is about lol

Great post overall, the bolded part I think is especially true.

$650 console

$80 game

10% sales tax (varies from state to state)

$803 for gaming when food, gas, etc. are expensive.  Feels like a tough ask for most.

I agree with both of you. GTA 6 is more for mature audience and those people in general wouldn't buy PS5 just to play it. The majority will choose to buy it on the most powerful hardware, to enjoy the game in the fullest. I started gaming on PC with GTA in 1998 and there's no way I would spend money on the console to experience that. I am pretty sure people like me will wait for the PC release.
