Second weakest non-remake/remaster launch in the franchise? On NSW? That's no good...is it possible Mario RPG fatigue is finally settling in?

Well, we don't know how much the ratio is compared to digital sales, which were pretty much non-existant on the DS and 3DS. It's possible that physical + digital sales taken together would amount to something more akin to Dream Team or even, if unlikely, Partners In Time in terms of sales.

You make a good point. No idea how it slipped my mind that digital sales are not included here. So, Brothership could be as high as third best seller? Not bad. The drop in Mario RPG sales, however, is a little bit shocking: SMRPG sell 330k physical during JP launch, TTYD sells 150k physical during JP launch, and M&L sells 60k physical during JP launch. That's more than -80% difference from 12m ago.

I don't know if I would say this is a strong launch, to not even get over 100k.

It sold 20% more than PS4 Pro did at launch, at more than double the price.

PS4 Pro - 65,194 units at 45,000 yen ($288 USD)
PS5 Pro - 78,086 units at 120,000 yen ($770 USD)

It's almost 3 times as expensive.
Considering its price, I think launch week figures are quite good.

Surprisingly good launch for the PS5 Pro here. There will definitely have been a notable portion of people waiting for it to come out so the baseline for the PS5 should be higher next year compared to how it's been the past couple months though it should still for sure be lower compared to the first half of this year. Monster Hunter Wilds should help the Pro out for those who want better performance but don't want to play it on PC.

Taking digital into account Brothership probably had a similar launch as Dream Team so a decent start but yeah three Mario RPG's in one year was definitely not a good idea. A lot of people will just pick 1-2 of them and be satisfied with that for a while.

Also the Switch has built up a lead of just under 500k compared to 2018 but it's gonna lose all of that lead very quickly. I wonder if it'll reach 90k for any of the remaining weeks or if it'll just be down compared to 2023 for all of the holidays.

SMRPG was a cult classic that has been on several all-time best games lists and has been massively beautified and enhanced, TTYD is a cult classic that had been beautified and enhanced, and Brothership is mostly more of the same in the Mario & Luigi series. I was much more stoked for the first two than I was for the last one from the get-go due to this. I'm actually much more shocked that TTYD sold less than half than SMRPG in retail than with the sales performance of Brothership.

Even with the Pro release Ps5 cannot get a week higher than last year. BTW what was going on last year for PS5?

Switch king of Japan, stable year on year

I don't think the same week of last year was normal.  It even beat the Switch

PS4 sold 93k the week it's Pro model debuted in 2016; the lower baseline of the PS5, primarily due to its higher price, seems to have kept it from reaching that threshold.

Switch being almost completed flat from a year ago is a good sign; depending on holiday sales and whether the week ending 5th of Jan is counted as 2024 sales, then 3 million for the year is still on the cards.

The launch of the slim model.

it wasn't just the slim releasing, it was the effect of also having no stock for 4 weeks of the normal PS5, therefore many people that wanted to bought the PS5 for a full month, couldn't because of no stock. Once the Slim got to the stores everyone who wanted PS5, who would otherwise buy it the previous weeks, bought one, alongside with those who wanted the Slim of course.

My primary threads:

Ultimate Showdowns: JP 2023 / JP 2024 / JP 2025 / 2025 / 2024 / 2023 / 20222021

Lifetime Showdowns: Global / Regional / Historical / YOY Charts / 140M+ Club Chart

Polls: When will the Switch: Outsell the DS? / Outsell the PS2? / LT expectations of: Switch / PS5 / XBSX

Yeah, I should have specified the effect of the Slim as you said rather than the new model itself causing the big surge in sales.

I don't think the high price is a reason for weaker sales. If so, the PS2 would have been a flop right out of the gate, but it wasn't. There is just not as much interest as Sony hoped. Simply as that! In Great Britain they are already discounting it to 659£, its far from sold out, Sony's unwillingness to produce more disc drives as they slowly move away from it does not help. Its far from sold out. I can walk in a random store and get it today if i wanted. Scalpers made the loss of their lifes by being forced to sell it clearly below it's launch price, i even saw an offer of 599 including a disc drive!! Yes sales where good, but the present circumstances don't paint the picture as a "highly successfull plattform, being contantly sold out". Heck, Sony wasn't even able being Up YoY compared to last year, not even 100k, despite the Pro.
