it wasn't just the slim releasing, it was the effect of also having no stock for 4 weeks of the normal PS5, therefore many people that wanted to bought the PS5 for a full month, couldn't because of no stock. Once the Slim got to the stores everyone who wanted PS5, who would otherwise buy it the previous weeks, bought one, alongside with those who wanted the Slim of course.
