Forums - Sales - The Road to 160m+ for Nintendo Switch (EDIT: See mod note in first post for new rule).

Europe was 24% of Switch sales last year so that's a healthy chunk to get cut.

But yeah sales are too low now to bother redesigning with a removable battery.

Weird how we went backwards in that regard. PSP and some DS models both had removable battery's iirc.

So can we assume there will be no newer model? usual Nintendo does a smaller version of their systems towards the end of their life. (NES, SNES, GB, GBA, Wii, just to name a few)

Pretty much impossible we'll see a new model for Switch 1. The Switch 2 is doing more than good enough for Nintendo, they have no reason to further incentivise people to buy older hardware especially with major RAM shortages and price increases, Nintendo would rather prioritize stuff that sells. Them preferring to discontinue the Switch in Europe over redesigning it to meet regulations indicates to me that they aren't really motivated enough to keep the Switch 1 life going and don't need the Switch 1 as part of their business anymore.

After the news of being discontinued in Europe, it's near impossible now for Switch 1 to reach 160M. The chances already weren't looking so good even under the original idea that Switch 1 wont be discontinued until 2028 or 2029. Them discontinuing Switch 1 in early 2027 for Europe is sooner than most of us expected which makes it highly unlikely it can reach 160M now when taking away approximately 25% of Switch 1's already slow sales now, and nothing indicates that NA or Japan will make up for that chunk of lost sales.

Like I mentioned earlier, a new model or price cuts are out of the question at this point. So only somewhat realistic approach where Switch 1 can still reach 160M is if Nintendo extends its life in NA and Japan for an absurdly long time and we see some miracle big game release on Switch 1. Or maybe Nintendo taps into that rumored India market and somehow gets big there. But realistically all of these goals are major reaches. Without a price cut or new model, the Switch 1 has virtually no juice left to squeeze out of the orange.

But regardless, even if falling short of 160M. It really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things and it's mainly just a fun topic of discussion to see if it could get #1, but it really doesn't change the great legacy of the system and how appealing it is. Still an amazing console regardless whether its #1 or #2 in sales.

It matters a lot actually. Reaching number 1 is very important for us fans.

Total Championships: Nintendo - 4, Sony - 2, Atari - 1, Microsoft - 0, Sega - 0

Yeah, this news about the Switch 1 in EU coupled with sales tanking in Japan since the price increase is a heck of a one-two punch. I guess the market could gravitate towards budget hardware in huge numbers due to everything else being $500+ in addition to Nintendo offering attractive bundles on top of that and leaving Switch (at least the Lite) on the market until 2030 in the rest of the world - but even then its chances are slim.

I'll still do the Switch vs a certain other console monthly sales comparison going for now. Though it might be short lived depending on how shipment figures look for the next couple of quarters.

Yes, please. I like them

Yeah .. From the price increase in Japan and now the discontinuation in Europe, I can see overall decrease in their FY projection coming with the next report. From 2M to something like 1.5 or 1.7M. So .. something like 157.5M as of March 2027. Then some 500-700k more by March 2028, so 158M are almost a sure thing. Not much higher from there .. shame.. that it was so close to that coveted 160M number and misses it in the end by some 2M ..
