It’s because they would need to create new models of Switch to conform with European laws. It is far from ideal, but Europeans can still get a Switch 1 if they really want one, but it will have to come on order from foreign markets.

Since this is an EU ruling, wondering if this applies to the UK.

Technically after Brexit they are not part of the EU anymore.

Legally Nintendo would only be stopped from selling in European Union countries.

But the wording in the Nintendo site is this:

They say Europe, not the European Union, so it's difficult to say if that's just an oversight on their part or they are pulling out from all European countries even where the removable battery legislation wouldn't apply.
