Forums - Sales - Nintendo announce Switch 2 sold 3.5 million in its first 4 days, fastest selling Nintendo hardware ever

With sales that strong I wonder how many units of the Switch 1 moved. I for one am rooting for the S1 to dethrone the PS2, I wonder what demand this strong is going to do to it's sales. It would also be interesting to see how many people screwed up and accidentally bought an S1 meaning to purchase and S2 (I'm looking at you Uncle "out of touch" Oswald).

As to the matter at hand, congratulations Nintendo and I want to see more stuff like they did with the recent Splatoon announcement. Using upgrades to old games as a new hook for the S2.

Weeks to reach over 3.5 million sold, according to VGChartz estimates:

  1. Switch 2 - 1 week
  2. PS5 - 6 weeks
  3. PS4 - 6 weeks
  4. Switch 1 - 13 weeks
  5. Xbox One - 14 weeks
  6. Xbox Series - 15 weeks

Should be noted the PS5 and PS4 had a staggered launch.

I'm curious, how will you guys display the Switch 2 sales on the homepage? Will "Current" become Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series? But that would mean we won't see Switch 1, PS5, Xbox Series anymore.

Signature goes here!

Massive supply at launch, huge sales numbers.

We will be adding Switch 2 to "Current" and keeping PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 1 on it. I am sure plenty of people want to keep an eye on the Switch 1 to see when/if it passes the DS and PS2.

We will also be adding a "Best-Selling Consoles" and "Best-Selling Handhelds" to the drop down list.

According to VgChartz, the biggest week ever for a console sales is 2,059 million units with the Nintendo DS in December 2008. This is crazy

The weekly numbers worldwide will be the biggest ones, no doubt. Let's see the monthly ones. The 3 best months worldwide to date are:

  1. December 2008 (DS) - 7.6M
  2. December 2007 (DS) - 7.5M
  3. December 2009 (Wii) - 7.4M

Also let's see if it will blow past the biggest weeks and months of every region.

For Europe they are:

  1. Week ending Nov 30th 2024 (PS5) - 855K / Dec 2007 (DS) - 3M
  2. Week ending Nov 21st 2020 (PS5) - 785K / Dec 2008 (DS) - 3M
  3. Week ending Dec 20th 2008 (DS) - 772K / Dec 2009 (Wii) - 2.36M

For US they are:

  1. Week ending Nov 21st 2011 (X360) - 1.01M / Dec 2009 (Wii) - 3.1M
  2. Week ending Nov 9th 2020 (PS5) - 1M / Dec 2019 (NSW) - 2.9M
  3. Week ending Nov 20th 2017 (PS4) - 988K / Dec 2009 (DS) - 2.9M

For JP they are:

  1. Week ending Dec 24th 2005 (DS) - 603K / Dec 2005 (DS) - 1.88M
  2. Week ending Dec 24th 2011 (3DS) - 497K / Dec 2011 (3DS) - 1.65M
  3. Week ending Dec 23rd 2006 (DS) - 492K / Dec 2006 (DS) - 1.49M

When PS6 and Xbox next launch, will you then add the Switch 2 to those or will you keep it alongside the PS5 and XBS consoles? Just curious.

Congratulations to Nintendo for this milestone.
Hopefully tariffs cool down more than they have and we don't see a price hike later this year or any point in Switch 2's life.
Nintendo may update their fiscal year forecast for Switch 2 units sold.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

nah it was everyone on the internet. And it is overpriced, that's objective. But just because millions of people are upset about the price that doesn't mean there aren't millions of other people ready to pick it up day 1. Also I'm sure there are plenty people who are not happy about the price but picked it up anyway. Being overpriced and having a huge launch are not mutually exclusive. The real question is are sales still booming later on in it's lifecycle. The launch was always gonna be ridiculous because so many people were waiting for it.

All three of the systems that were successors to 150+ million selling systems have been overpriced cuz the companies got greedy after such dominant successes, but of the three S2 is probably the least overpriced and also the most desirable, and also it's coming out mid-gen against the consoles so that helps since it's the only new thing around for years before and after.

Anyway, the fact that it absolutely demolished every previous system launch is awesome, and even more crazy is that it did that despite being overpriced and pretty much everyone being pissed off about the greedy pricing! Clearly there was a lot of pent up demand for next gen Nintendo after 8 years of arguably the most popular system ever.

$450 is not an excessive price for a new gaming system in 2025, the console standard has been $500 for years now.

Yeah, people need to learn the difference between what is objectively "overpriced" and something deemed "too expensive", as they are two different things.

The PS3 was too expensive for many at $599 in 2006, but it certainly was not overpriced for what you were getting at the time.

And Switch 2 hardware is also not overpriced for its tech and functionality in 2025.

The objective measurement for something being overpriced or not is sales. In other words, it's a matter of a product's price matching its value or not.

So while the PS3 was sold at a substantial loss by Sony, it was still significantly overpriced. What is commonly forgotten about is that a console's value isn't determined by the technology inside alone, but also its game catalogue as well as other traits that may be present or not. This is why when you look at the PS5 and Xbox Series X with their very similar technology at the same price point for the longest time, you still end up with only one console being priced right while the other one is objectively overpriced since about a couple years after its launch in late 2020.

Great sales and being overpriced are two mutually exclusive things when it comes to products that are non-essential for living.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.

Do publishers actually react to this kind of information? Like, if they see the launch is huge, do they start developing massively for the Switch 2? Or is that not how it works?
