Forums - Sales Discussion - Sony confirms PS2 has sold over 160 million

That guy in the Youtube Video is bizarrely butthurt and just seems to have a grudge against Nintendo fans and wanted any excuse to make a video dissing them.

I wonder why the switch lite isnt been tracked as a handheld? So the ps portal id tracked as a ps5?
Just curious

Sell your ps5 and keep playing PS5 games on the portal then

If he has PS Plus Premium this is not a problem for him..

Yes, it is. However every other case where nintendo and Sony console are really close, Sony wins. I don't know if it is because of coincidence, or because Sony did the extra mile to beat the system which is close, (the vita wii u one isn't exactly sure as we don't know exact vita figures, but till recently vita was ahead of wii U) the psp is ahead of both 3DS and GBA, PS1 is barely outselling Wii, and the recent last figure for the PS2 - 155M barely beat the DS. The only one left was exactly the PS4 with the 1.5M needed. So when you have 3-4 more cases of this happening, you begin to question is it just a coincidence, or Sony saw it in the end of every of their consoles life and do the extra mile just to beat those Nintendo console that were really close at the time.

It's already been said but yes there is a difference between PS4 outsold Gameboy and PS2 is still the highest selling in history. It's exactly what they are flaunting under PS2. I find it so funny that Sony fans really are trying to defend this. Can you imagine if Nintendo said all these years ago that DS sold 154 million and then 10 years later they adjust the figures to 164 million? You think no one would notice or find that weird? Especially with the timing of a competitors product.

I just answered to the first portion of this. The second one, yes I agree. Sony, and not only Sony, Microsoft for that matter too, should report the numbers just like Nintendo did, on time, after the quarter ended, for each console (including Vita) by exact numbers at least by 10K, just like Nintendo. This is the proper way. In 2013 I knew PS2 sold more than those 155.1M and wanted to report the last official figure, but they just combined the numbers. They could also update it in 2018 when they updated the PS3 one (since those weren't reported after the March 2017 quarter ended, but they waited around year or even two if I am not mistaken, and I don't know why, maybe because of the Vita sales not getting clear at the time ? since in 2017 it was still somewhat relevant for them ?) I think they waited till 2018 or 2019 to reveal the official latest PS3 numbers (and it was written as of March 2017). Then was perfect moment to update the PS2 numbers as well as the Vita was dead by then.

Either way, I am not sure how good idea this is (particularly for the number 1 selling console thing) since if they do it for that Nintendo can easily just do a price cut by 50$ or even 70-80$ on every model, and very easy beat them for the 160M number, since without one, Switch is on track to at least finish close. So if by that Sony is challenging Nintendo, it's not so much of a challenge really, cuz at the moment Nintendo are in the better position for that one since they have the system that is still selling, Sony's one is dead, not moving, and the one thing that can move the sales was this - late update on the sales figures.

Fuck I wasnt awere about that. Ok, I am down for the new PS5 portable digital online model.

Start the counting!

We reap what we sow

Hahaha. They put out this information for Nintendo, why else would they reveal it now.

Around the Network

■PlayStation® : +102.4M
■PlayStation®2 : +160M
■PlayStation®Portable : +82.5M
■PlayStation®3 : +87.4M
■PlayStation 4™ : +117.2M
■PlayStation 5™ : +65.5M

I see this move as rather idiotic, regardless of Sony's motivations.

If it's because of the Switch, they should know that Nintendo not only might surpass that 160m figure without moving a single more finger, but in case they struggle they will very likely just cut the Switch's price. And that would put an end to this stupid question.

If it's not because of that (PS Anniversary/Whathever)... Then they are incompetent and dumb. It's been almos 12 years since the last sales update. Are we supposed to believe that they were just sitting on this information for that long just to reveal it now? Or are we supposed to believe that they just figured the 160 milion thing recently? Either way its... Dumb. Very dumb.

No matter how you put it. It's so fucking dumb. This makes them look like fools from every single point of view xD

I cant see how Sony could purposily manage to keep PS1 ahead of Wii, when Wii wasnt even a thing while PS1 was in the market, even when it achieved 100M+ consoles sold.

They did the same as now? Coincidentally updating the numbers when Wii was getting close? Genuine question

No, this one is coincidence, but PSP they may did the extra mile there, PS2 too, although it was selling better, probably not but still a coincidence, PS Vita, although that one is unclear it's often put ahead of Wii U. And the only one left was the PS4. They could easily produce 1.5M more.
