Because there is a difference in between selling THE MOST and selling better than another

Yes, it is. However every other case where nintendo and Sony console are really close, Sony wins. I don't know if it is because of coincidence, or because Sony did the extra mile to beat the system which is close, (the vita wii u one isn't exactly sure as we don't know exact vita figures, but till recently vita was ahead of wii U) the psp is ahead of both 3DS and GBA, PS1 is barely outselling Wii, and the recent last figure for the PS2 - 155M barely beat the DS. The only one left was exactly the PS4 with the 1.5M needed. So when you have 3-4 more cases of this happening, you begin to question is it just a coincidence, or Sony saw it in the end of every of their consoles life and do the extra mile just to beat those Nintendo console that were really close at the time.

I cant see how Sony could purposily manage to keep PS1 ahead of Wii, when Wii wasnt even a thing while PS1 was in the market, even when it achieved 100M+ consoles sold.

They did the same as now? Coincidentally updating the numbers when Wii was getting close? Genuine question
