Assuming a third of Wonder's sales are digital it should end the year around 2.25 million, a fall of 25% from the NSMB Wii game despite Wonder releasing a month earlier. Even if that were 50% digital it would have just matched it despite the Switch having three times the userbase.

That's a huge attach rate drop and it might be indicative that 2D Mario will be one of the few Nintendo franchises to see a decline this gen compared to previous highs.

Yea ngl I expected more from Mario games this gen. Outside of Odyssey and MK8 I feel like the other Mario games on Switch fell below my expectations compared to the other franchises that blew up on Switch. I would expect a game like Mario 3D World to be at around the 20 Million range on Switch considering that it has 2D Mario elements that would interest more casual consumers and we even seen Mario Odyssey reach close to 30M, but 3D World is still at around 12 Million which is the same as 3D Land on 3DS despite Switch having nearly twice the install base and an install base that buys way more software. Sold more than twice as much then the Wii U version but the Switch has 10 times the install base.

Mario Maker 2 also underwhelmed

even NSMBU, even tho it's an unambitous port, we saw that MK8 being a port as the bestselling Switch game, and for most of the Switch's lifespan NSMBU was the only 2D Mario but hasn't even crosses 20M when Wii & DS versions sold 30M.

I guess Mario already reached saturation well before the Switch era so the popularity of the Switch wasn't really gonna expand the series to many more people despite the Switch's huge install base.

Didn't Nintendo like two months ago come out and say that Mario as a whole has seen growth on the Switch? I think at this point the issue is the amount of Mario games on the Switch is too much.

Super Mario Odyssey
Super Mario 3D All-Stars
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
Super Mario Maker 2
Super Mario Bros. Wonder

And this is just the platform games, not counting, Mario Sports, Kart, Party, Paper, etc. It really is a lot .......

Switch is definitely entering the retirement age phase of its life cycle, 75k is way down, next year would be ugly but they're going to probably have Switch 2. Not bad for a system this old, but Nintendo can't go long with a system in decline when they only have one hardware line.

Mario Wonder not boosting the Switch that much, I think the audience of people that were sitting around and not buying a Switch for all the other Mario games was overstated. It's not the Wii era anyone, the "oh noez, I can't play 3D Mario" crowd is not that large anymore, most Switch owners grew up with a N64/PS1 or PS2/GCN. As such you can see 3D Mario has closed the gap to the 2D Mario games by a lot if not entirely.

It's definitely been a couple of weird weeks for the Switch this holiday when you at how much it is performing this holiday season in comparison to last year.

But yeah, 7th year n all ... This might spruce up Nintendo to eventually schedule their next system for the Fall/Holiday period next year in that case, cuz if we are to have a 8th year Holiday for the Switch, I would expect something a bit worse than what we're seeing right now.

Still, Mario Wonder is maintaining a good base, so I don't understand the alarms from anyone since this was known to be a marathon and not a sprint all along.

Also Dragon Quest Monster 3 completely over performing everyone's expectations since it also sold more than DQ11S first week which is insane that a spin-off could outsell a mainline game in any capactiy

Nintendo is Dropping Switch 2's HUGE Reveal Next Month!

Of course, it may all be false alarm, however, it may be true as well. So don't count it out.

This!! Attach rate for games is between 8-9 on the Switch. Meaning the average Switch owner buys 2 games a year. There is simply a lot of competition if you're looking for one Mario platformer or a Mario themed game in general.

I know there's always the possibility of a surprise turnaround from announcement to release, but unless it happens, factually, Nintendo always takes it's time with it's hardware announcement even if they were to fast forward the process by a couple of months, expect it to last at the minimum 6 months.

So, I think there's no way we see an early hypothetical Switch 2 release before next Fall. Anywoo, not only that they still got a software pipeline that announced games releasing until this early summer. So this rumor is even more suspicious with that in mind.

Anywoo, the Far West of rumors is still wild and untamed.

That's a good point, when it comes to Super Mario platform games the Switch has more than any other Nintendo console I'm pretty sure.

The 3DS had 3 with Mario 3D Land,NSMB2, and Mario Maker.

The Wii U had 3.

The Wii had 3, Mario Galaxy 1&2, and NSMB Wii

Gamecube/N64 both had only 1.

The Switch has 6 so the sales are probably more shared between them, making individual game sales not as high as you'd expect

Depend on what kind of viewpoint we are talking here. As far I am concerned Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury leg it phenomenally to become the 2nd best selling 3D Mario game, yet some pointed disappointment towards such a result.

Mario Maker 2 is not a straightforward 2D platform game since the level editing part is it's most important factor here. Nonetheless, it has outsold the first game.

The port of NSMBU did much MUCH better than what people were predicting at the time.

And now, Wonder doesn't sell like the gangbanger of the decade and people are going into panic mode for a game that's obviously gonna let it out as usual, even during the next console cycle so it's fine if the series is not exactly booming, because as it was pointed out. The franchise has experienced overall growth. That's what truly matters to them.
