Forums - Sales - The Road to 160m+ for Nintendo Switch (EDIT: See mod note in first post for new rule).

Bumping this thread was prolly one of the worse choices a VGC user have ever made in the history of the site. Its causing insanity in folks that are obsessed with the 160 number that they create fiction to try and justify continued discussion.

Far be it from me to make this recommendation but i think it will do wonders for people's mental well being if this thread was locked.

This is a site that focuses on sales data. The fact that the Switch was at 154m at Nintendo's last Quarterly report and will probably be somewhere between 155m and 156m at their next report means the little console that could will be getting very close to hitting the top spot. So it's only natural for people to want to discuss the possibility of whether it'll get over the line or fall short in the end.

Also, none of the other consoles are really hitting any major milestones just yet. So the Switch is probably getting a little more attention then normal.

Exactly, and it's not just another milestone. It's THE milestone for video game selling. I don't see a problem with this thread

Nintendo should consider a new Switch 1 home SKU, maybe with a cheap camera included like the NeX offers and just ape that whole setup and sell it for cheap ($250).

They are probably too focused on the Switch 2, but this record is something they could have easily if they really wanted it.

I like the idea of a cheaper SKU, perhaps sweeten it with a 4 or 6 game bundle including Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, MK8, Odyssey, Smash Bros, and Animal Crossing… Too bad they ended the voucher deal, could have included a few of those.

But anyway, the cheaper SKU could include some Switch 2 features, like the magnetic Joy cons. Or they could stick to the original and do a new form factor, like SwitchTV.

And so was with the DS, and the same was with PS2. Don't you all get it, that by talking what could've been or what could easily be, it is valid for the other consoles as well ? It's like Switch could do it but others don't. They could very easily wait with the 3DS, and cut the price a little more of the DS, and surely it would reach 160 and maybe even 170M. PS2 was selling like 4M for it's last 2 years and it's drops were small year on year, so if they continued to sell it for 2-3-4 more years, it would get to at least 170M for sure. The Switch could also get there if there was a nice 100$ price cut in 2023 or 2024 and maybe launching Switch 2 in 2026. All of the three could sell more, it's not valid only for the Switch. So this saying does not mean " huh look Switch could easily get there and beat the PS2 ". It's not valid since PS2 and even DS would easily do the same if the necessary things happen in their market life too.

This generation is unlike any before it. Power doesn't matter for most games gamers play today. Arguing from a raw power standpoint is pointless. Nintendo historically cut systems short to compete with Sony's power leaps which cut short a lot of Nintendos systems potential selling power.

GBA → Killed by PSP
DS → Killed by Vita
Wii U & 3DS → Forced drastic pivot, launching Switch midway through their cycles

But gaming has fundamentally changed in the last decade. Nintendo could've delayed Switch 2 by 1+ years—original Switch would've kept selling strong. No need to halt production anytime soon. They could pump out Switch Lites for another 5 years and they would still sell. The industry is in uncharted waters: Top-selling games don't need PS5 power. Check Steam (or any platform's top 100 weekly charts):How many released in the last 5 years?
Last 10 years?

Why are devs still cranking out PS4-level hits?

Bottom line: Every bet against original Switch has been dead wrong. Nintendo can now produce Switch 1 alongside Switch 2—they'll both sell. (Bundles or price cuts will juice numbers further.) Unlike Xbox/Sony, Nintendo isn't rushed by a "power arms race. "Switch 1 hits 160M+. Only wildcard: global RAM shortages.

The Switch 2 is part of the Switch family now, and the backwards compatibility is a huge win. The 'Switch 2 Edition' cross-gen carts still cause a bit of confusion, although they pack both versions into one cartridge.

Even with the released Switch 2 hardware, Nintendo isn't abandoning the OG Switch; with Tomodachi Life and Rhythm Heaven confirmed for 2026, there is still some powder left software wise with possibly more to come next year. I still expect them to drop the Lite price eventually to keep the budget friendly entry point alive.
