GBA → Killed by PSP
DS → Killed by Vita
Wii U & 3DS → Forced drastic pivot, launching Switch midway through their cycles
But gaming has fundamentally changed in the last decade. Nintendo could've delayed Switch 2 by 1+ years—original Switch would've kept selling strong. No need to halt production anytime soon. They could pump out Switch Lites for another 5 years and they would still sell. The industry is in uncharted waters: Top-selling games don't need PS5 power. Why are devs still cranking out PS4-level hits?
Bottom line: Every bet against original Switch has been dead wrong. Nintendo can now produce Switch 1 alongside Switch 2—they'll both sell. (Bundles or price cuts will juice numbers further.) Unlike Xbox/Sony, Nintendo isn't rushed by a "power arms race. "Switch 1 hits 160M+. Only wildcard: global RAM shortages.
