Well, it's going to go down as their greatest handheld of all time, so it should. If it doesn't (don't know how that could happen), it'll be a huge disappointment imo.

There is no way it doesn't pass the DS in Japan at this point. Fairly good chance to take the crown by the end of this fiscal year. It'll probably beat the DS by at least 2 million, passing 35m.

According to Famitsu the Switch has now sold over 31 Million units.

Maybe here is the right place to put the chart I have made for the Switch in Japan (after it passes the DS), and even one that I plan to feature soon in my thread (which I haven't still upload), so here is Switch vs DS + Wii (since the Switch is hybrid, and it is fair to compare it to both audience home+portable from the DS/Wii generation, and most notably since this is actually next after DS, as there is no other console that has sold more than 33M in Japan):

While the Switch will undoubtedly sell the3M needed to outsell the DS in Japan now, it won't sell another 15M anymore. Do even have a shot the Switch would probably have to be the only offering from Nintendo until at least holidays 2026, and I doubt Nintendo will wait that long for a successor to come out, especially with the rumours and signs getting more and more frequent...

That would be much more achievable and more importantly, realistic. So yes (but only if you want).
