Sony is extremely strong in Asia outside Japan

PS4 sold 23 million ROW and PS5 will likely surpass that as well

Last month literally 30% of its total hardware sales (VGC bumbers) were from ROW

Sony only weak market is Japan, but their rumored new handheld should fix this and make them to sell on 15 million range again

At what cost though?

I keep hearing these rumors about Sony releasing a new handheld and I just think “…Really?”

Remember the Vita? There’s a reason Sony stopped making handhelds in the first place. They saw the growing mobile elephant in the room, the difference was they didn’t (and still don’t) have the IPs to still compete, sell well, or even thrive despite mobile like Nintendo does.

And they also stopped making handhelds for the same reason Nintendo stopped making two separate systems - It became too costly and demanding in resources for them to support two separate systems when their development resources were spread so thin and one system clearly wasn’t pulling its weight.

And unless Sony seriously puts effort, emphasis, costs, and resources into doing so, they’re going to run into the same problem again.

The consoles is to port PS5 and upcoming PS6 games. During Vita life it was not possible to run current gen games in affordable hardware

It will be possible soon. Games now are developed with weaker setups in mind, and development cycles are very long so they are stretching cross gen titles. Even in 2026 there will be AAA games that run on PS4. A new handheld will have no shortage of games

If I could play my digital library on new PS handheld then I'm immediately sold as long the price is not outrageous. No exclusives or IPs required. So far I'm considering a Steam Deck which is essentially this. If new PS handheld works as alternative I could get that instead of Steam Deck

This is week 49

EDIT: BG already said it.

These are the global sales for Metroid Prime games

Metroid Prime: 2.84 million
Metroid Prime 2 Echoes: 1.10 million
Metroid Prime Hunters: 1.08 million
Metroid Prime 3 Corruption: 1.41 million

Metroid Prime Trilogy, Federation Force and Pinball sales were never revealed by Nintendo because they all failed to sell a million units.

Absolutely huge week for Switch in Japan... Metroid is... its just not someting the market in Japan doesn't cares about, clearly. What makes the charts boring is the lack of competition. It just so lopsided to Nintendo and it doesn't reflect the rest of the world not even remotely. I hope that when the PS6 handheld launches (its aparently dockable) in Japan that it makes things interesting again. No one is expecting for Sony to beat the Switch 2 but you got to expand the market. And Sony needs to step up and meet the market where it is.

Despite Octopath Traveler 0 having the lowest selling first week of the franchise, it still outsold Metroid Prime 4...

TBH if this wasn’t the case, I’d be shocked. The Japanese don’t care about the space alien, laser gun game. But the latest installment in a SquEnix RPG? They’ll eat that up.
