Forums - Sales - Top 10 best holiday and non holiday months (20 charts)

PS5 worldwide estimates-
November- 4.5 million
December- 4.3 million
Total- 8.8 million
This is the high end of my estimates mostly driven by higher sales in the "Rest of the world" category which has become an x factor for PS5 sales this gen along with higher sales in Europe and (to an extent) Japan.

Switch 2 sales estimates this holiday (November and December):

Japan: 1,7M-1,8M.

Rest of the world: 1M-1,1M

I don't care what sales say. I still think the best one was in the 90's. Pick a console. It doesn't matter. The stuff that was coming out for SNES and Genesis... man. Seemed like every time you turned around, there were five genre-defining games coming out for the holidays.

The thread is now completed. Best holiday months for each region has been added, as well as best non holiday months for each region as well.

Check the OG post. A few notes:

  • November is where PlayStation shines.
  • December is dominated by Nintendo.
  • November + December has only 1 PS year so far. Can the PS5 change this ?

  • November in US is dominated by Xbox. Can Nintendo dethrone them and beat the 1.77M with the Switch 2 ?
  • December in US is all for Nintendo, can the Switch 2 beat it's predecessors?

  • November in Europe is almost all PlayStation. Can PS5 put new record this year and pass the 1.95M record from last year ?
  • December in Europe is Nintendo dominated. Can the PS5 change this and finally put the brand in the top 5 for the month in that region ?
  • November + December in Europe has a record of 4.55M by the DS which hasn't been broken. If not now with PS5, then when ?

  • Japan is purely Nintendo. However November record is from the 3DS. It's time Switch 2 to change this! Can it reach 600k for November ?
  • Can the Switch 2 reach 2M in December and beat the DS record of 1.88M there ?

  • For all non holidays, the record is from the NSW2 Launch. While others is separated between the NSW and the DS.
  • DS casually selling 1M in April 2009 in US.
  • DS casually selling between 800k and 920k in Europe in summer hot months of 2008, and April 2009 and September 2007.
  • DS casually selling almost a million in September 2006 in Japan. Also without a sweat doing between 680k and 800k in normal months like March or June or May in 2006.

Best holiday months / When will the Switch pass 160M? / LT expectations of: Switch / PS5 / XBSX / Switch 2

The vibe I'm getting from those numbers is that DS was disproportionately popular during November and December and Switch was a little better spread out through the year (while having some huge holidays). That makes sense as Switch has more of a fanbase it seems that are "core" gamers or adults (and often both).

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 122 million (was 105 million, then 115 million) Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

Man DS and early Wii eras were just insane. Can't believe it's been 20 years, but being on the forums back then and witnessing those numbers were magical times indeed.

DS in particular had an insane 4-5 year run.

Other thing that I didn't expect was that even 2004 and 2005 years of the DS made it to the top 10 of Japan charts, and not only made it but the 2005 is on 1st place for December, and 2004 is on 4th place. To see and think about 2004 and 2005 years of DS being some of the records there is wild. It's like they never existed since everyone talks about those 2007 - 2008 - 2009 years, that they forgot the DS launched in 2004. I always thought them as the strongest years of the DS, and I didn't expect 2004 and 2005 to be on there. 2006 also surprise me by participating in many of the charts.

Not sure about the other regions, but NS2 looks to be comfortably positioned to hit 400k JP November. Whether it can do 1mil JP December? I’m unsure. Legends Z-A, Bananza, and MKWorld is a powerful combo that’ll definitely send sales sky-high this holiday season… but there isn’t any SSBUltimate+PokémonLGPE nor Switch Lite+PokémonSwSh to really send sales into the stratosphere. On top of the higher price tag, we’ll need to wait and see.

In US, I believe I said 2.5mil for Nov+Dec (IIRC?). In EU, NS2 likely won’t be as hot as in the other two regions (with PS5 receiving so many price cuts, in addition to a lack of NS2 software with strong EU appeal).

All in all, NS2 is looking to hit somewhere in the range of 8-12mil shipped this holiday quarter (Oct through Dec) WW. That would put NS2 at 18-22mil shipped by the end of this calendar year.

Also, DS & Wii was quite the tag team during Holiday 2007 through 2010, filling up almost all the top positions. Nintendo was really raking in some good hardware sales there for a bit… I have no idea if any hardware developer will ever hit those highs again. That’s crazy to see!

Just discovered PS does a lot better in November than December in comparision to the others, lol.
