This is the Global Lifetime Console Showdown comparison thread.

This sales thread will be about Lifetime sales of the consoles and will be updated on a monthly basis instead of weekly. The model will be just like the Ultimate Console Showdown thread however instead of weekly sales for the current year it will be monthly sales for the entire lifecycle of the given system compared to other competitive system (by sales, not generation/type/manufacturer) that the contender have to beat (or is next in line for it) or might finish close to it. Anyone interested in the same thread however for the different regions such as US, Europe and Japan can also subscribe to or follow this one: Regional Lifetime Showdown

The Switch 1 comparison with the DS is added to my archive thread named Historical Consoles Showdown.

The battles are as follows:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 vs Wii (101M) vs NSW1 (155M+)
  • PS5 & Xbox Series vs Nintendo DS (154M)
  • PlayStation 5 vs PlayStation 4 (117M)
  • Xbox Series vs the US sales of PS4 (35M) & GBA (36M)

Nice concept.
I think Xbox Series vs Wii U in Japan is gonna be extremely rough to say the least.
If I were to guess right now I honestly think it will fall 2 million short give or take (so not quite beating 360 either).

I think Switch will beat DS in Japan by about a million, and beat DS globally by roughly 5 million, give or take a few million.
PS5 should easily beat PS3 globally, but I think it'll fall 5-15 million short of PS4 (so I'd say minimum it passes PS1).
XBS I think will end up doing around what 360 did globally and in Japan.

I will have to assume the Switch will outsell the DS based on this. It does have some catching up to do but it's not going to completely die in 1.5 years like the DS did (end of production I assume)? Probably end up with the Switch 5-10M ahead I'd say.

Switch should be able to easily defeat the DS if Nintendo keeps it alive long enough. The Switch can easily last to 2025. It still sells 300k a week and will have a massive holiday this year unlike it's rivals which will be very much supply constraint during that time. Especially PS5. So having a easy to produce system with a good flow of software on hand is a great idea. They can release the Switch 2 when supply is less of an issue.

It is nice that while we wait for the big fix from JLauro and Talon that Bandorr is able to manually restore deleted posts. For anyone wondering he has to manually do it one post at a time and only works for posts that have been edited.
