Sadly soo..ow well who cares anyway, what would happen if the switch did outsell it? The ps2 legacy remains.
Ps2,ds and switch are kings in terms of unit sales.

Really ? And because the record actually matter to Nintendo, they did what ? They did a price cut of 100$ two years ago ? one year ago ? they did 50$ price cut this year ? Oooh .. right. They did price increase, although they could afford even doing 100$ price cut, with the billions of profit they made through out all of the Switch generation. They even discontinued the Mario kart 8 bundle that was around for how much 7 ? 8 years ? Yea, it surely matters to Nintendo. |
Nintendo is playing a game of how long they can sell the Switch for full price/inflated price because of the tariffs until they act by doing the smallest push possible to get it over the line. Obviously, Nintendo is not interested in winning by a big margin. Ego is definitely a thing among Executives!

Unlikely. But okay, time will tell. At the current pace it is moving, especially the holidays (November for now) I really doubt that.

Could one final revision make the difference? A Switch Micro? Or something else? I've been thinking a Switch SP or Lite SP would be the best bet.

It would, but pretty much no chance of it happening. If they did do a new revision I'd like it to be a clamshell switch lite too. Something you can actually put in your pocket.
So the consensus is that the chances of Switch beating PS2 "naturally" are almost nil.
It would require Nintendo's executives to hold a "war meeting", all dressed in samurai armor, and declare that based on "Nintendo Bushido" they are compelled to surpass PS2. Then they would make a toast with sake and shout "Nintendo BANZAI!"
All Nintendo has to do is keep selling the Switch Lite for another 5 years or so as an entry level model and the Switch family will creep over the 160 million mark.
I can see that happening.

That could be smart. Even with price increases, Lite is a good deal cheaper than Switch 2 despite its low specs even for its price.
Switch and especially Switch OLED are pretty close to the price of Switch 2. Their purpose is coming to an end.
I would not be surprised if the other models are discontinued in 2026 or 2027 and Switch Lite is left standing until 2030 or so. I picture Switch Lite as the budget Nintendo device that you see 1-3 of in stock at the store while there are a few rows of Switch 2.
Lifetime Sales Predictions
Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)
PS5: 122 million (was 105 million, then 115 million) Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)
Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)
PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)
3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

Like the others said, the only ones who care about these records are the fans. Remember, Nintendo, Sony, & MS are publicly-traded corporations. They and their investors care more about profits than they do about bragging rights. A last-generation machine narrowly beating a record set by a 25-year-old console probably isn't going to increase share prices.
Nintendo already set a new personal best with the Switch. It's one of only three consoles ever to surpass 150M, and the #4 spot didn't even hit 120M. It set new software records. First-party Switch games had sales volumes and attach rates that are among the highest in the console market, with more games selling over 20M than any other system in history. There's already been over 1.45B software units shipped for it, crushing Nintendo's previous record of 948.76M software units on the DS. And Nintendo made a shitload of money from all of that. I'm sure the executives and shareholders are more than satisfied regardless of what side of 160M the Switch ends on.

What if the Switch 2 get its price increased next year? Do you think this can give some extra life for the Switch 1? Enough for it to reach 160m
