Last year says roughly 71K though, isn't that a 20K difference?

I am looking at the table in the original post. It's 79K there.

My primary threads:

Ultimate Showdowns: JP 2023 / JP 2024 / JP 2025 / 2025 / 2024 / 2023 / 20222021

Lifetime Showdowns: Global / Regional / Historical / YOY Charts / 150M+ Club Chart

Best holiday months / When will the Switch pass 160M? / LT expectations of: Switch / PS5 / XBSX / Switch 2

91701 - 79055 =12,646

PS5 got a 10,000 yen Black Friday discount this week, which is why the base model rose by 19k while the Pro and Digital fell. Couldn't quite match the same week last year though.

Switch though surprised me; after barely getting a boost from the holidays last year, the fact it's up YOY this week was not what I expected; cool to see though.

Minecraft is a beast.

But it makes me wonder, is there no Minecraft retail SKU for PS4/5?

I always see NSW, but never Playstation.

Minecraft like many games on PS, simply went digital. Digital only games also tend to dominate Japan like Fortnite and Apex. Difficult to track that kind of stuff though.

I think the PS4 physical is out of print, but there is a PS5 physical which we never see.

Surprisingly good week for the Switch with it both being up YoY and having its best week since the very start of the year. Next week should show if this is a one-off relatively strong week or if it'll do really well in December. Also nice to see the PS5 almost back to 40k but it's probably gonna drop again.

I'm surprised so many are surprised that the Switch is doing better this holiday season. After all, last year Tears Of The Kingdom pretty much stole the sales from the holiday season, which in result was extremely muted last year. Of course without that factor it goes back to normal with a bigger spike during the holidays, a spike that's higher than the flat-ish sales from last holiday season despite over the course of the 10 first months it sold quite a bit better last year than this year.

I'm gonna chalk the Switch boost this year up to Dragon Quest.
That franchise is iconic and legendary over there.
I'd go as far as to say that it may be THE most iconic and legendary video game franchise in Japan.
The only other franchise I can think of to rival it is Pokemon, and there's NO shortage of Pokemon games on the Switch so the boosts from that franchise aren't going to be as substantial anymore.
Dragon Quest on the other hand. Unless I'm mistaken, the only other mainline RPG on the Switch is Dragon Quest XI S.
For the #1 selling system of all time in Japan, the Switch has a surprisingly small amount of mainline Dragon Quest representation.
That's why when Dragon Quest XII drops, that is going to REALLY do numbers for hardware. That's the last remaining major bullet in the chamber as far as Switch killer apps in Japan go.

A surprise return of Super Mario RPG after eight months of absence. And crossing the 500K milestone no less. If only Paper Mario TTYD was here to be here for trifecta.
