Forums - Sales - The Road to 160m+ for Nintendo Switch

Verry funny how people seem to think companies cant just lie about sales numbers.
In that regard maybe nintendo is lying to and switch havent even reached 100mill yet, i mean can anyone proof it?

I think sony also counts the PSX and ps2TV as a sold ps2 unit?

I believe there are laws in place which prevent businesses from doing this (specifically, laws intended to protect investors). If a company was dishonest about hardware figures, it would be reflected in revenue data and there would likely be an investigation. I suppose there is nothing from stopping businesses from fudging numbers up or down 100-200k/quarter, but I don’t think they’d be able to get away with skewing up >10mil LTD, for instance.

The PSP figure is incomplete because announcing it would allow people to derive the sales of the Vita which Sony does not want to disclose.

I know. I am not saying there isn't a reason for it. Still the fact remains, if we should assume purely based on the Sony "accurate" data to the nearest 100k, then the chances should be 50/50. Since only 3 of them are accurate to the nearest 100k, and the other three are either not there, or not close to the nearest 100k. We don't know on which side they have decided to put the PS2 on. As I said, I also think PS2 barely passed the 160M. But judging purely by the Sony " accurate " sales page is giving us the chances of 50/50.

What isn't accurate about the PS2 figure is the date which they left at "as of March 31, 2012." Previously they had "more than 155.0m" at that same date with shipments that happened afterwards. But I'd say the unchanged date is just an oversight. The date is obviously false because previously we had elaborate maths to calculate the shipments that had happened after March 2012 and the resulting range added 4 to 7m more units to the PS2 total, giving us lifetime sales of 159-162m units.

The PSP figure is as of March 2012, but we know this one is incomplete because shipments continued beyond that date. Vita isn't disclosed on purpose. The PS4 figure is also as of a date that doesn't constitute the end of its shipments. That's the difference between these three systems and the PS1, PS3 and PS5 where the figures are either end of life or up to date which makes all of them accurate.

There's no 50/50 chance of where the PS2 belongs when you think about it. 160.0m is its end of life number.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.

I agree on the first two paragraphs. But facts are facts. The 50/50 chance I talked about was purely about the accuracy of the given numbers on the Sony page within 100k and if PS2 numbers belong to the group of within 100k, or not (for example actual PS2 numbers may be 160.2 or 160.3M). The 3 consoles that don't have data within 100k of the actual shipments are PSP, Vita and PS4. The other 3 are within 100k accuracy. Based only on this, it's 50/50 chance of PS2 being within 100k of the given "more than 160.0M" or not. I also think that PS2 barely passed the 160M mark, but judging only by the data Sony wrote on this page is not the way to go in my opinion. Both birthday page and that data page by Sony lists the PS2 as "more than 160.0M" or "over 160M". So it's not exactly 160.0M. How much more, until that 160.63M is a mistery, since there has to be amount reserved for the kiosks, demo and promotional units too.

Lol its so funny to see this debate about where exactly the PS2 falls between 160-161M. Realistically its too early to start having this discussion when the Switch still needs 6.9M before this convo will actually have merit. The bigger question is if the Switch could even hit 160 for this discussion to even matter, I think its gonna be very close.

Nothing wrong with debating the PS2's final numbers, the Switch just still has bigger fish to fry which is selling another 6.9M at the tail end of its lifecycle which may be a bit difficult but not impossible. Who knows maybe Tomadachi Life could be a system seller since its one of the few franchises that hasn't gotten representation on Switch yet and first game since 2014. We'll see

Honestly it all depends on Nintendo at this point, if they plan on selling NS1 along side NS2 for the next few years, then yes it will surpass 160m. But if they cut off production before hand, then it wont. All we know is that the the NS1 XBS and PS5 generation is unlike any generation before it, so while we can compare to the past, we also need to keep in mind that this generation anything is possible at this point.

If someone told any of us 7 years ago that the NS1 XBS and PS5 would never have price drops, but only price increases, and that games would also see a jump in price most if not all of us would have laughed and used past data to back up what we believe. Yet here we are, so honestly, we should not be surprised if Nintendo continues to produce and support NS1 alongside NS2 far behind what past consoles have done. At this point all cards are on the table and are possible.
