I think Playstation is better known for 3rd party offerings than 1st party anyway. Playstation is just getting more and more expensive, games lack local multiplayer and are available on PC, that might be cheaper to upgrade in the long run than buy a new Playstation every 2-3 years.

Its looking likely that PS will continue the trend in Japan of every new PS selling less than the previous one, which has been the case since the PS2.

PS3 sold less than PS2, PS4 sold less than PS3 and PS5 will now sell less than PS4.

Overall I'd say third party is a bigger selling point for PS than first party, yeah. 

In Japan in particular the AAA audience seems to be shifting more to PC, while mobile and Switch gobble up the bulk of the mainstream audience.

Yep.. It even won't manage to at least match the gap between the PS4 and the PS3, so that the gap don't become wider .. PS3 sold 10.5M, and PS4 sold 9.7M. So that's a gap of around 800k units. If PS5 match the gap it should end around 8.9M, but with the speed it's going now, if something doesn't change for the better, I doubt if it will reach even that number.

Switch 2 vs Switch 1 Sales Comparison in the US - July 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch 1.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 in the US and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

Switch 2 Vs. Switch 1 US:

Gap change in latest month: 175,861 - Switch 2

Total Lead: 892,096 - Switch 2

Switch 2 Total Sales: 2,081,172

Switch 1 Total Sales: 1,189,076

July 2025 is the 2nd month that the Nintendo Switch 2 has been available for in the US. During the latest month, the Switch 2 has outsold the Switch 1 by 0.18 million units when you align the launches. The Switch 2 is now ahead of the Switch 1 by 0.89 million units.

The 2nd month for the Switch 2 is July 2025, while for the Switch 1 it is April 2017. The Switch 2 has sold 2.08 million units, while the Switch 1 sold 1.19 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo Switch 1 sold 48.27 million units to date. The Switch 2 is currently 46.19 million units behind the lifetime sales of the Switch 1.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in the US - July 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

July 2025 is the 58th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by just 826 units units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 0.11 million units. The PS5 is currently ahead of the PS4 by 1.37 million units.

The PS5 has sold 26.45 million units in 57 months, while the PS4 sold 25.08 million units. Month 57 for the PS5 is July 2025 and for the PS4 is July 2018.

The PS4 crossed 27 million in month 61 and 30 million in month 71. The PS4 sold 34.93 million units lifetime in the US. The PS5 is 8.48 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales in the US.
