My first post in that Swden karma thread was done half-seriously, too. I just felt like attracting some Scandinavian by showing off half-correct knowledge. (I managed to attract two Finns, so I guess I'm successful.) By the way, do you have the source of that Finnish tar claim?

Sorry, couldn't find the claim. It's been more than a decade since somebody threw it into air. I believe it started as an observation, then someone went on to use it as an example of how Swedish coloniasation benefited Finland (that was under Swedish rule at the time) at the expense of slaves, or something like that. Because of the absurdity of the initial assessment, it started living it's own life.

    on 11 January 2017

Impressive. I found it hard to believe simply because of the logistics of getting Finnish tar into the Atlantic in the first place. Then again, you guys did end up spawning Nokia, so anything goes.

    on 11 January 2017

Umm... I think the logistics are pretty good actually, considering the tech back in the day. First and foremost logistics are politics, even today, which is why Scandinavia/Fennoscandia is logistically an island.

There's baltic sea to get you to atlantic and there are lots of waterways that lead to baltic sea. Basically the only way to trade continentally or globally was by sail.

I guess the nordic pine and traditional methods produced high quality tar, that was in high demand until the steel boats started replacing the wooden ones.

    on 11 January 2017

I was thinking 1400s rather than after that, my bad. Then I realized that Atlantic naval trade wasn't possible yet.

Haha. Yeah, basically the demand for the tar was created by trade and naval warfare.

Hi. I'll respond here to the last thing you replied to me becaus I think we might derail the thread. At first, I didn't understand what you meant when you said there were hardly an games for a Wii/Nintendo fan on the Wii U. But now, I think I get what you try to say. There are not enough games for the so called "casuals", right? Games that are so easy to understand that everyone can plug them in and have a good time. Is this what you want to express? If so, then you are absolutely right and I agree with you. That's why I asked wether you were serious or joking.

On the other hand, your descriptions to the games I mentioned that I thought were good for the Nintendo gamers are something I cannot agree with. We have completely opposite opinions about each of the games we talked about.

Oh, YWW means Yoshi's Woolly World, btw.

Well, it's the discussions these boards are for.

No, I'm not meaning any "casual" games. The description fits the whole Wii U library,. Nintendo themselves bought the term "casual" and made all their core games into casual games with Wii U.

I'm talking about arcade gameplay. Games that are easy to pick up but hard to master. Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Excite Truck, NSMBW, MK Wii on Wii. Games like R-Type, Shadow Warriors/Ninja Gaiden, Megaman, The Legend of Zelda. In the Wii U e-shop, "everyone, intense" games. The opposite to "gamer, casual" games.
Also the content has to be fresh. When you look at 80's and 90's, Nintendo was so great not because of making these expansion set -type of sequels, but to rethink the whole game for the sequel. SMB to SMB2 to SMB3 to SMW to SMW2. Zelda to Zelda 2 to Zelda 3.
Controls need to be simple in order to be able to match the fast paced gameplay. Anyone can grasp even the most complex controls, you just need to give more time for them to react. Typically all the analog-controlled games have much less intense gmeplay than the games that use the D-pad - I usually tell my kids that play games on Wii U Virtual Console to play with the D-pad instead of analog stick, because the stick don't allow fast and accurate control for fast paced games.

    on 07 January 2017

Sorry I can't understand why "Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Excite Truck, NSMBW, MK Wii on Wii. Games like R-Type, Shadow Warriors/Ninja Gaiden, Megaman, The Legend of Zelda" are all easy to pick up, hard to master but games like MK8, DKCTF, Starfox 0 (etc.) are not.
MK8's only flaw may be the battle mode, there is no denying, but the game itself is MK Wii but better in every aspect. You still start with 50cc and go all the way up to 150cc and you will try over and over again till you mastered the drifting and learned shortcuts to get faster and faster all the time. So why should this not be easy to play, hard to master?
DKCTF is much more than only ice levels. There are 6 worlds and only one of them is ice, the other 5 are ice-free. And there are no scritpted events at all. Where have you got that from? Again, you learn the levels, you practice over and over again until you finish every stage and until you happen to find every Kong letters and puzzle pieces. Why is this not easy to play, hard to master?
Then Starfox 0. There can't be any game that feels more arcady than Starfox 0. It is a pure retro action shoot 'em up! Such games don't get to see the light of day these days anymore because almost no publisher believes in them anymore. Again, you learn the stages, learn enemy patterns, learn the controls, you score higher with every try, you find gold medals and think about how to get more of them and what you need to do for them and how you need to play in order to get them. Again, how is this not easy to play, hard to master?
I also can't understand why you wipe off Pokken Tournament that fast because of the multiplayer. What is bad about using the Gamepad as second screen? This games' multiplayer is amazing.
Bayonetta and Wonderful101 both have very hard to learn gameplay. Typical Platinum games. Both are very easy to pick up but extremely hard to master.

Maybe I'm missing something, but your explanations for these games don't make sense to me at all. Please explain one more time.

    on 07 January 2017

MK8's flaw is not only the battle, but the biggest flaw (that breaks the game) is how the control of your vehicle changes when you hover or go underwater or hover underwater. This is like changing the rules of the game in the middle of the game - and again and again and again. This wouldn't be a problem if you had the option to choose your route, where you did not have to hover or go underwater - like you do in every other Mario Kart. Also, the tracks aren't so fun to drive. Also the online is fucked up, you can choose from only 3(?) tracks at a time to vote.

Starfox 0, luckily you can turn off the motion controls, but the controls are definately casualised from Starwing/Lylat Wars. There was nothing wrong with their controls, they were just simple enough for a fast arcade gameplay. Hitting the R is just retarded, and what's even more retarded, is to hold it. This wouldn't be a problem if you could just choose the way you want to control the game. But you don't. It would be better and feel more natural to use even the motion control to do the tricks than the analog stick.
It doesn't feel arcade at all.

But the whole gameplay is scripted in DKC:TF. You advance a little, a wall comes in front of you, then you're forced to do X in order for a platform to appear you need to jump on, so you could pull a lever on it in order for the wall to disappear.
In order to advance, you need to use a certain character, that isn't even a challenge to get, because it's right in front of your nose when you need it.
The bossfights are too long and too boring because of them being repetive.

Well, there's no problem in using gamepad as second screen for a second player, Hyrule Warriors does that too, and I think it's a good solution for the game. But for Pokken the root of the problem is more like the retarded angle, which is why you're forced to use the second screen. I've been playing fighting games for more than three decades with a sideview already, and have never heard a single complaint about it, so there exist no problem that the view would fix.

    on 07 January 2017

    Our oppinions differ.
MK8: I honestly never felt that the driving mechanics alternate when hovering or being underwater, nor has anybody who I've ever played with. "Also, the tracks aren't so fun to drive. Also the online is fucked up" -> Oppinion, I disagree.
Starfox 0: Hold R?! You neer have to hold R. What makes a game arcady to you? I still haven't figured that out. Some examples, please.
DKCTF: Such events happen sometimes, but they are definitley not the majority of the exerience. Most of the time you can freely roam through the levels. And you are never forced to use a specific character at any time, but instead can clear every stage with every character. Agree on the boss fights.
When you said "heavily scripted" I thought of walking simulators like CoD. Games that should have been movies instead.
Pokken Tournament: Retarded angle -> oppinion, I disagree, I have no problem at all with the angle.

Please describe what kind of games you would have wanted on the Wii U. That would help a lot.

    on 08 January 2017

And the online score system is broken in MK8, as you just keep adding up more points the more you play - pretty much how all the mobile games work - and it takes ages before meeting challenging opponents online.
Just because you don't feel it controls differently, doesn't mean others didn't.

Which button was used for shooting in SF0, wasn't it R? Holding the button was used for serial fire, if I recall.

Majority and majority, the point is, that's what's happening constantly in Tropical Freeze and it's interrupting the gameplay all the time for nothing.

What kind of games should there be - Mario Kart with solid gameplay would be fun, just like MKW.
The gameplay in NSMB is great, Nintendo should've made the content better - actually, this is the problem with 3DW too.
It would be fun if there's Excite Truck sequel, I would've loved F-Zero. Metroid, 3D Mario, a Wii Sports type of game, Splatoon would be fun if it had good controls, arcade sports games, co-op beat'em ups, arcade racers, shooters, party games (other than Smash Bros).

There's a reason nobody bought Wii U, and it's not because of the hardware.

    on 08 January 2017

You can lose points in MK8 when you rank low.
Shooting n SF0 is with ZR, holding it down charges the beam. There is no serial fire.
There are quite a few party games and there even is a Wii Sports game, Wii Sports Club.
"arcade sports games, co-op beat'em ups, arcade racers," -> Agree, those would be cool, but those games are hard to find on any system nowadays.
If you like F-Zero, play Fast Racing Neo. It's good.
    Yes, I miss Metroid, too.

    on 08 January 2017

Obviously I remembered the shooting in SF0 wrong.

I've played Fast Racing League on Wii, and not really my type of game. Maybe a little like F-Zero, but far from it.

Wii Sports Club is a port of Wii Sports, only that you need to buy the different games individually in-game.

Wii got the closest on the games we've ever been in the 2000's.

    on 08 January 2017

And they wish for Xbone and Wii U aswell. A month ago they wanted a PS3. Of course, I don't need 200 games, I just need 20 that are high quality.

Hahaha. I remember when the current version of the site was released when everyone was saying how cool it is. :D

    on 09 January 2015

Ugh, don't remind me. There was certainly room for improvement, buuuuuuuut....

Well, at least the lime green color no longer physically hurts my eyes. I remember the first week was rough as all get out!

    on 09 January 2015

I think the biggest problem is how the site works especially on mobile. But the colour scheme is definetely one of weirdest. :D
