It's quite funny the fact that besides VGChartz, wikipedia also made an edit with the "more than 155" numbers again. Maybe I have never seen in my life, online information to change so fast.

On the official PS2 page it's still the same 160M on the both places (up in the table with all the details, and down in the sales tab) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_2

By the way, another interesting thing is, long before the official PSP numbers got out of 82.5M, IGN had calculated that the PSP numbers were 82M. They too have calculated since a couple of years now that PS2 numbers are 159M. With that taking into account , the previous calculation of reset era that Trunks mentioned, and the Jim Ryan comment (and the way he hasn't just mentioned 158M but jumped directly to rounding up 160M, I am now more and more sure that the number is at least 159M.) Jim Ryan would 100% mentioned the word "over" if PS2 passed the 160M. The chances also are very slim that Sony would've missed that announcement back in 2013. And having in mind that Sony hadn't called a drop in sales in the last year of PS2 in their report leaves me to believe even more, that 4.1M is the absolute minimum for it's last year, therefore 159.2M as already calculated by others should be the bare minimum. To me the comment of Jim Ryan just helped to get the famous calculated range from 158.7 - 161.9M down to 159 - 160M.

Funny enough, as someone here called last year, Sony (or person from Sony) came out and tried to update the PS2 final numbers. So the total sales of the consoles, or maybe only the best ones, present in fact something for them .. It's not like they don't care at all cuz, the update is not made at just any time, but a time where Switch is getting close enough, to the very danger range of 140-160M. Interesting. Now only leaves for Sony (when Switch reaches 150 or pass the 155M mark), to resume the production on PS2, and start to sell it again, for all those who want one, (cuz PS5 can't play PS1, or PS2 games natively) and the show will be full. Battle for the ages.

The range is something between 159 and 161. Does it really make a difference? I mean the Switch isn't selling another 20 million. I've got two... I'm not getting another one. And be honest we all have more than one. Either way... if it doesn't outdo the DS, it will still be in the top three. That's amazing.

I really hope the Switch passes the PS2. Imagine following its trajectory for almost 10 years and seeing it barely reaching PS2's numbers. And considering we still need to wait some more years to see if the Switch manages to accomplish this feat and that these last years are when it has less and less gas to burn... It's like watching a swimmer swiming miles and miles in an ocean to reach to beach and the more he gets close, the less energy he has

And then Sony comes out with to revive the PS2 with a new SKU - Pro model, with a 1080p output availability, 10 biggest hit games thrown in the package, PS2 console which is almost half the size of the last model (only the dvd there, and it's other parts below that, with external power supply) and 2 wireless compatible Dualshock 3s thrown in the package (yes, that means bluetooth connectivity as well). All that for just 99$.

By the way some funny things I met on twitter :

Didn't Sony try this with PS1 classic? Also what would stop Nintendo from countering with the same later? Nintendo's would actually be profitable because Nintendo would only need to bundle their own games due to them being the most popular, while Sony would need to bundle 3rd party games all asking for their cut. Pretty sure this is why PS1 classic flopped.

That's why I am saying PS2 Pro. Not some mini console .. that flopped like the PS1 mini.. I am talking about brand new SKU model of the PS2 family, not just some remake or I don't know how to name the PS1 classic mini console. Also who said that Nintendo can't do the same too ? They can. That is the interesting thing. The games won't be a problem, cuz they will be just a normal disc PS2 copies, that can be found today everywhere.

So a PS2 rerelease? Plays PS2 games and all?

It seems pretty odd that the PS2 in its final fiscal year outsold its prior fiscal year especially when PS2's final fiscal year only had the PS2 selling for 9 months since it discontinued before 3 months before the FY ended, which is why I'm skeptical that it actually hit the 160M figure and makes me believe Jim Ryan said 160M as a number to round up too rather than actual confirmation.

If we were to count modern mini- retro consoles to the total sales numbers of the original platform than the SNES sales total would be at 54.6 Million instead of 49.10M since the SNES classic sold 5.5 Million units.

I think the only way that would work is if they re-release the console with an actual disc/cartridge drive that could still play those same games natively off the disc/cartridge, which I doubt will ever happen since not many people still own games from 30 years ago
