The Switch lite sku is a price cut, was 100 dollars cheaper when announced and allowed people to get a "Switch" when they couldn't afford the base one. This whole notion that the Switch never received a price cut is absurd and just another reach by the same user as always. So the PS2 record would not have been "cooked" at all and everyone here knows damn well that it WOULDN'T be cooked since the Switch already had a price cut in the form of the Switch Lite which sold over 25M units.

I thought a mod already said to stop platform warring too.

That is what I've been telling for years. Only because Nintendo didn't do official price cut, doesn't mean it didn't got alternative version of the price cut. Is the Lite cheaper than the original 299$? It is. Can you still play all the Switch 1 library on it ? You can. Therefore you get the same machine that can play the same games for cheaper. That is essentially a price cut. It's like saying PS2 didn't got a price cut with the slim version because you couldn't put a hard drive in it. Yes the Lite is cut version, but again is it cheaper and can it play everything ? it is and it can, therefore it's cheaper version, therefore it had the same impact and the effect a 100$ would had back in late 2019. The second price cut was the inflation itself. 299$ or 199$ back in 2017 or 2019 respectively were and are still a lot less than what they were back then.

As of September 30, 2025 Nintendo shipped 154.01 million Switch units. The DS is at 154.02 so the Switch already passed the DS. We will have confirmation when we get the next update with the numbers for the quarter that ends in December 31st.

If sony would produce 180mill ps5's and sell them dirt cheap they would sell all of them. Thats the bottom line.

But they dont,thats a fact.

And so could the Switch. The difference here being is the PS2 got *years* to sell at discount pricing as is.

Not only has the Switch not gotten a price cut, it's gotten a price *increase*.

If the Switch had even one reasonable price cut across the board ($50 for the main SKUs, $30 for the Lite model), the PS2's record would be cooked, and everyone here knows damn well that would be the case.

Problem is... it didn't.  In reality as you stated, those price cuts that would have hypothetically pushed it over the PS2 never happened.  Therefore the question is:  In reality is there a reasonable path for the Switch now get there?  I would say that it is possible buy not reasonable or probable.  Switch probably wont pass 1 million sold in 2026.  And there is plenty of stock out there so don't expect Nintendo to ship very many more either.  If it can actually sell through 155 million that would be amazing on its own.  Am I correct that you would agree with this assesment?

Why do you think this is a the case?  Don't you think with the Switch 2, rising prices, and what has to for sure be market saturation, the prospects of reaching it are not 'easy'? Possible.. sure but easily... not really.

I already warned everyone about platform warring. The thread is going to be temporarily locked until either A) I can get with the mods and we make a group decision on what to do, or B) Rol comes back and personally requests the thread be re-opened.

The thread is now unlocked and reopened for business. However, there is going to be a ground rule that will be followed:

This thread will not be a venue for platform warring. Only Nintendo platforms are to be mentioned. Anyone mentions PlayStation or Xbox, and that's an automatic thread ban.

Consider this your one and only warning. I will add this note to the OP just in case someone might miss this reply, seeing as we don't have the capacity for threadmarks on this forum.

Thanks for reopening the thread. I personally think it is interesting to see if Switch will hit 160M+ or not.

When it comes to number of units shipped the Switch is ahead of the DS at this point with it only being 10K behind at the end of September. Our sell-through estimates are missing the Americas and Europe for December. Adjustments could occur once Nintendo releases their earnings report. We want the gap between shipped and our sell-through estimates to shrink every quarter from here on out.
