Forums - Sales Discussion - The Road to 160m+ for Nintendo Switch

Finally we have at least true confirmation regarding the final sales figure range of the PS2. Sold over 160 Million but we know based on calculations of Sony's PS3/PS2 sales that it's less than 161.9 Million. Giving us a range between 160-161.9M the PS2 sold.

However, I don't think the PS2 exceeded 161 Million. If it did it seems like Sony would've said " Sold over 161 Million" like they did with their other consoles on the website but they didn't.

Some may say Sony was just rounding to 160 Million, but they didn't do that with their other consoles. For example, for the PS1 they didn't say "Sold over 100 Million" which would've made sense if they were rounding, but they didn't, they specifically rounded to the nearest millionth stating "sold over 102 Million". This makes be doubtful the PS2 sold over 161 Million cause if it did, they would've stayed consistent rounding to the nearest millionth like they did with their other consoles, but they didn't.

This narrows down the range to the PS2 selling somewhere between 160-160.99 Million. I'll personally consider the Switch to win if it reaches 161 Million.

I agree the PS2 is most likely between 160,000,001 and 160,999,999 units sold. We decided to put it at 160.01M on the Platform Totals page as they said over 160M. I wish they were as good as Nintendo and round their figures to the nearest 10K.

Switch needs 162+ to end the discussion. I'd say it has a 50/50 chance.

Interestingly, Sony doesn't mention numbers for PS Vita and PS VR (PS5 and PS VR2 are the current products, so they don't mention numbers there, makes sense). The only exception where the number doesn't fit is for the PSP where they mention "over 80 million" when it probably should be "over 82 million". But in the PSP's case the "over 80 million" number was mentioned in normal text size, not BIG like for PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4. Therefore, I fully agree, the definitive number for the PS2 is below 161 mil. When the Switch sells 161 mil it will be the definitive winner!

Good that we finally have official confirmation of over 160m for PS2. Like others have said, I'd consider 161m to be victory for the Switch. 15m to go. The race is on! I think they might just barely do it by 2027. Should easily be over 151m by the end of this year (Nintendo is probably hoping for 152m by the end of this year if they want to meet their revised forecast).

I also noticed that too with how they said "over 160 million" instead of "over 161 million." If it really did sell that much, they would have just said it like they did with the PS1 "over 102 million," PS3 "over 87 million," and PS4 "over 117 million."

Now it's entirely possible that Sony is trolling Nintendo and as the Switch gets close to 160 million (assuming it has the gas left in the tank to get there) they may come out and say "Actually, it's 162 million."

But again, why not just say that right here and now?
And what's with this "one of the best-selling consoles ever?"
No, it's cleary THE best-selling system ever? There's no debate, the PS2 is #1 all-time.
So why not just say THAT too?
Unless... they think it won't be #1 for much longer...

Yep, they are like leaving a door, if the Switch approaches let's say 155 or 158M before it's done, they left a door, to come out and say it's actually 161M or something like that. The other thing for leaving that door is maybe the PSP numbers written in the small text indeed .. over 80M when they should be over 82M. One of the best selling, yes it may be fear from the Switch, and so that the quote doesn't get old fast if it were "the best selling" ... or  maybe they are planning to prolong the generation with the PS5 till 2030, and because of this do everything in their power for that system to reach the 160M level ? It's not out of the question.

Anyway, another interesting easter egg is this:

Really ??? The worst selling system, saying that it survives ? What does that mean ? It's linked to some last of us add, but it's like has nothing to do with that, I don't know, what are they trying to tell ?

Sorry still don't believe in 160+ million sold units.

I'm nowadays a proponent of Cliff™ around 150 million is the successor is released in the next 6 months and is BC.

It depends how many Switch units Nintendo manufactures.

Switch 2 is tracking around a $400 price point. Keeping Switch Lite at $200 or $150-$170 and also having one Switch hybrid left is a more budget-friendly way into Switch.

It depends what consumers see value in, but cutting Switch out early and having the cheapest Nintendo platform at $400 is a terrible idea.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 40 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

Well, since Sony put the "more than 160.0 million" on their "Business Data & Sales" page, the number is bearing even more truth. If you look at the sales data on that page, you see that they round to the nearest 100K (with some inexplicable outliers: PS5 with "56 million+" (sell-through), PS4 with "more than 117 million" (sell-in) and PS5 with "more than 65 million" (sell-in). Surely, Sony is applying the universally applied bookeeping standard of rounding up from .05 to .09 and rounding down from .04 to .01. That being said, we have an even narrower space for the possible final number of the PS2: As they put the number at "more than 160.0 million", the range can only be between 160.00 (below 4,500 "more") and 160.04. I really think this is the case.
