Forums - Sales - August 2026 VGChartz Estimates Thread

Welcome to the August 2026 VGChartz estimates thread, which includes the dates from August 2 to 29. The articles breaking down August 2026 estimates will be posted in this thread.

You can go to the front page of the site and use the drop down to see the different weekly and monthly sales.

VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.

This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

Good month for the Switch 2. I would say that next month would be worse for it due to the price going up at the start of September but it seems it did really well in the UK that month. Good month for the PS5 as well being notably up compared to the PS4 so GTA 6 is already doing something for it. In better circumstances it would be about to have an amazing 2nd half of the year. Xbox Series on the other hand is just about finished while the Switch 1 hits another low.

Well I wouldn't call the Series "finished". Irony of ironies, a while ago, you were on the more optimistic side for it and I was on the pessimistic (2024 projection I think?) Now we are reversed. With the price hikes taken effect from August 1st, doing over 100k (given doing almost the same amount for almost all of the year) is a good sign. We should wait and see if the baseline will fall further for September and October, but following a decent price hike, and dropping just slightly is unexpected. If it can keep such a baseline or close to it, let's say at least 80k per month or more for the next year, I think the Xbox might have some 1.2M at least left in the tank for 2027 and some 800k after that until end of life, which is still something, given all the doom and gloom everyone is talking about it. And a drop from 2.5M last year to around ~1.8M this year, is not so bad.

Considering the price hike I was expecting Xbox Series to do much worse in August. Not that the sales right now are good. If Project Helix launches holiday 2027 that likely means Xbox Series will finish ~20 million behind the Xbox One. Unless Microsoft decides to keep selling the Xbox Series beyond the release of Helix. OG Xbox and Xbox One shipments were killed once their successor released. Only the Xbox 360 remained available for a good while.

Either way the high prices ain't helping. RAM and SSD prices are expected to remain high, if not get higher, in 2027. With a chance of prices starting to come down in 2028.

IMO Project Helix and PS6 shouldn't launch until 2028 or 2029.

I did say just about so next year is when it'll basically be finished. That year the sales of it will get so low that it won't really be worth discussing any more even if its decline in the final stretch ends up less severe than expected. It's already sold about 95% of its lifetime sales basically.
