Welcome to Ultimate Consoles Showdown 2026. Anyone interested in the same thread but for Japan can follow the Japan one, which is updated weekly. Anyone interested in Lifetime based instead of yearly, for both Worldwide and regional data can check and follow both of these ones: Global Lifetime Showdown / Regional Lifetime Showdown  which are updated monthly, as well as the Year on Year Charts comparison thread.

The battles for this year are as follows:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 vs DS 2006 (20.7M) vs NSW1 2018 (16.4M)
  • Nintendo Switch 1 vs Nintendo 3DS 2019 (1.5М)
  • PlayStation 5 vs PlayStation 3 2012 (12M)
  • XBOX Series vs PSV 2015 (1.8M) vs Wii U 2016 (1.2M)

Quick access data for 2025:

  • PS5 - 17.4M
  • NSW2 - 15.6M
  • NSW1 - 5M
  • Xbox - 2.5M

The target for all of the comparisons is to be as close as possible (or gives us range in between when there are three competitors in total) and to give us better perspective where the given console is going this year and having good chance of finishing close in the end. Therefore if some of the contenders go way too far one from another then, the contender's year, or even the contender itself may change, so that it suits better to the given's console performance. Other thing is also I would not repeat main competitor (on the tables) from the year before from my thread, so even if it's a good fit, I would always look for a different one, so it's always new, fresh and interesting.

This is always one of the best threads to follow on here for the year. This one's biggest point of interest will of course be the Switch 2 but the PS5 still has a good amount of juice left.

I think the PS5 will beat the '19 PS4 , but miss the '07 Wii by ~1 million
I think Switch 1 misses both targets.

Switch 2, probably beats '18 NSW no matter what, but without a good idea on this year's heavy hitters lineup there's just too much of a question on whether it can beat DS '06.

I doubt we get a new 3D Zelda, and new Mario also seems rather doubtful since the 3D Mario team just released DK Bananza. We are getting Splatoon Raiders and Fire Emblem, but those are relatively small titles. Simply put, I have no clue what's about to come out of Nintendo so I can't really predict sales until we get a real direct

Maybe i'm being optimistic but if I were to guesstimate for the 3 newer consoles I would put them all near the top end of those ranges.
 - PS5 does seem to be faltering in Americas & Japan but it's still holding well here in Europe (& PS is still primary choice in a lot of the "Rest of World" countries) so I don't think it will drop too much unless GTAVI gets delayed again.
 - XB seems to be dieing but i'd be surprised if it can't at least get 1.5M
 - NS2 bit more of an unknown as to whether it can soar high, as while it is technically breaking records for the "fastest to" it's mostly due to the launch month... that said I think 16M is a given so again would be surprised if it's not a lot closer to (or maybe even over) 20M

NS1 does seem to be holding on longer in Japan than I would have expected, but at least at the moment it's the only one of these I would predict to be closer  to the lower end of it's range.

Given the state of things though, who knows, maybe all three current gen will have to increase their prices making NS1 a re-kindled budget option.

Data and charts have been updated with weeks 1, 2, 3 and 4 for every comparison!

  • Switch 2 is behind both the DS 2006 and the Switch 2018.
  • Switch 1 is slightly behind the 3DS 2019 year which finished at 1.5M (I removed the DS from this comparison, as it's clearly not needed).
  • PS5 is behind both of its competitors in the face of Wii 2007 and PS3 2012.
  • The Xbox Series is behind both Vita 2015 and Wii U 2016.

All around January has been very weak month this year.

  • With the recent price increase of the PS5, it's new competitor is now PS3's 2012 year of 12M. For the first three months of this year where the price was the old lower one, PS3 is leading.
