That is a lot of charts! And all interesting.

I just want to shout out the OP for his great work!

That is for getting the data and sharing it.

I can't recall if we've had a thread that has the most units sold per year records of all consoles. I think DS and Switch are right around the top. I think you can even adjust the data to add the quarters by calendar year and not fiscal year.

This is a pretty cool discussion about the best holiday seasons for consoles.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 122 million (was 105 million, then 115 million) Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

DS is the only system to have two 30mil FYs, NS1 came very close to having 30mil in FY’21. No other system has even come close.

I never realized how strong 3DS was in JP. Switch had steady legs, DS had a few years of massive numbers, and 3DS did close to Switch numbers but for a shorter span of time.

Man DS and early Wii eras were just insane. Can't believe it's been 20 years, but being on the forums back then and witnessing those numbers were magical times indeed.

DS in particular had an insane 4-5 year run.

Other thing that I didn't expect was that even 2004 and 2005 years of the DS made it to the top 10 of Japan charts, and not only made it but the 2005 is on 1st place for December, and 2004 is on 4th place. To see and think about 2004 and 2005 years of DS being some of the records there is wild. It's like they never existed since everyone talks about those 2007 - 2008 - 2009 years, that they forgot the DS launched in 2004. I always thought them as the strongest years of the DS, and I didn't expect 2004 and 2005 to be on there. 2006 also surprise me by participating in many of the charts.

If I remember correctly, the DS hype started earlier in Japan. It was already a huge hit in 2005 holidays (I believe it's best or second best selling holidays ever, also top 2 all time Japan) and became a sensation in 06. The West caught on particularly after the DS Lite released with NSMB.
