Switch 2 vs Switch 1 Sales Comparison in Japan - July 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch 1.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

Switch 2 Vs. Switch 1 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 169,674 - Switch 2

Total Lead: 921,706 - Switch 2

Switch 2 Total Sales: 1,696,409

Switch 1 Total Sales: 774,703

July 2025 is the 2nd month that the Nintendo Switch 2 has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch 2 has outsold the Switch 1 by 0.17 million units when you align the launches. The Switch 2 is now ahead of the Switch 1 by 0.92 million units.

The 2nd month for the Switch 2 is July 2025, while for the Switch 1 it is April 2017. The Switch 2 has sold 1.70 million units, while the Switch 1 sold 0.77 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo Switch 1 sold 35.92 million units to date. The Switch 2 is currently 34.22 million units behind the lifetime sales of the Switch 1.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Japan - July 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 58,169 - PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: 677,831 - PS4

Total Lead: 393,124 - PS4

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 6,948,679

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 7,341,803

July 2025 is the 57th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 58,169 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 0.68 million units. The PS5 is currently behind the PS4 by 0.39 million units.

The 57th month for the PS5 in Japan is July 2025, while for the PS4 it is October 2018. The PS5 has sold 6.95 million units, while the PS4 sold 7.34 million units during the same timeframe.

The PS4 crossed 8 million in month 61, 8.5 million in month 68, and 9 million in month 72. The PS4 sold 9.68 million units lifetime. The PS5 is currently 2.73 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4 in Japan.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in Japan - July 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 in Japan, as well as looking at lifetime original Xbox sales and Xbox One sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in Japan in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in Japan in December 2005. The original Xbox launched in Japan in February 2002 and the Xbox One in September 2014.

XSX|S Vs. X360 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 15,643 - X360

Gap change over last 12 months: 181,536 - X360

Total Lead: 697,784 - X360

Xbox Series X|S Total Sales: 682,589

Xbox 360 Total Sales: 1,380,373

July 2025 is the 57th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for in Japan. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox 360 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 15,643 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 0.18 million units. The Xbox 360 is currently ahead by 0.70 million units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.68 million units in 57 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 1.38 million units. Month 57 for the Xbox Series X|S is July 2025 and for the Xbox 360 is August 2010.

The Xbox 360 crossed 1.4 million units in month 59 and 1.5 million units in month 67. The Xbox 360 sold 1.66 million units lifetime. The Xbox Series X|S is 0.98 million units behind lifetime Xbox 360 sales.

Switch 2 vs Switch 1 Sales Comparison in Europe - July 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned Europe sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch 1.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 in Europe and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

Switch 2 Vs. Switch 1 Europe:

Gap change in latest month: 135,165 - Switch 2

Total Lead: 664,605 - Switch 2

Switch 2 Total Sales: 1,526,983

Switch 1 Total Sales: 862,378

July 2025 is the 2nd month that the Nintendo Switch 2 has been available for in Europe. During the latest month, the Switch 2 has outsold the Switch 1 by 0.14 million units when you align the launches. The Switch 2 is now ahead of the Switch 1 by 0.66 million units.

The 2nd month for the Switch 2 is July 2025, while for the Switch 1 it is April 2017. The Switch 2 has sold 1.53 million units, while the Switch 1 sold 0.86 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo Switch 1 sold 39.02 million units to date. The Switch 2 is currently 37.49 million units behind the lifetime sales of the Switch 1.

In Japan specifically I don't think that's so much a problem as Sony's first party games aren't that popular there.

Games like Monster Hunter being on PC though does hurt them, as PC is growing in Japan while PS declines.
