  1. Dragon Age: The Veilguard

"Is this the end of Dragon Age? Veilguard was good, but BioWare needed an all-timer, and I'm nervous about what's next"

"Dragon Age: The Veilguard did not sell well. At least not well enough for publisher Electronic Arts. Three months out from launch, The Veilguard missed its sales target by "nearly 50%," 1.5 million players versus a projected 3 million. The Veilguard reviewed well (well enough, in our case), but has sold worse than BioWare's notorious live service flop, Anthem. Now the future of a studio that was once synonymous with triple-A RPGs is more in doubt than at any point in its post-Inquisition wilderness era."

The rest of the article is long but it is worth the read if you're interested. But here's the closing thoughts...

"What I know for sure is that things look worse than ever for one of my favorite studios, the one that got me into RPGs and PC gaming in the first place. It didn't have to be this way, but very clear, unforced errors in direction and management have left it with one more shot to turn things around—if that."

In my opinion they don't have another shot. I doubt there will be ME4. If the replace and hire good writers, then they need to, as Colin Moriarty said, let this studio do there own thing. They are good at certain things but following old bioware talent osn't in their abilities. I'd love to see them get the ME4 budget and a licence to do their own IP, something new and fresh and I reckon they'd nail it.

please add your thoughts below, do they have another chance or was this their last? I mean after Andromeda, Athem was their last chance, after Anthem, Veilgaurd was their last chance... now ME4 is their last chance. Just put the nail in the coffin, stop chasing IPs the team can't live up to and let them have free creative reign... and fire the writers who ar so, sooo terrible.

Honestly.... yes.

Unless they survive (bioware) and Mass Effect is a massive hit, and they reboot Dragon Age (sometime down the line)... yes its done.

If it took 2 months to get 1,5m players.  Even if that was less than half of what they expected, think about it like this.
Factoring in, game give away, reviewers, people playing it through a service,.... multiple people playing the same game in a house hold ect.
The fact it didn't take long for it to go 30%+ off in sales price.

It could be around like 1m actual game sales, and not all of that at full price.
Thats not enough to recoup costs of a AAA game, thats been 8years+ in the making.

Yeah, Dragon Age is over, and they're going to blame everyone but themselves and cite every reason except the fact that they made a game most fans did not want.

And people need to stop with the "favorite studio" nonsense when that's based on games from years ago, especially after those studios release something subpar in the time between. They are not what they once were.

Mass Effect 4 is going to sell a lot of units. They could release an absolute piece of trash and it would still be a financial success. However, if it's significantly below expectations in terms of reception or sales then BioWare will be in serious trouble. A studio named "BioWare" might still be there but a lot of the same people won't. On the other hand, if Mass Effect ever reaches such depths that EA decides to end the franchise then BioWare will almost certainly be wiped off the map. In the world of triple A publishing, a studio is only as valuable as their best performing property.

They just need to remake Origins keeping the story and voice acting but adjusting the combat (without completely redesigning it) and fixing the many bugs. That would be a winning formula in my eyes.

I heard the phrase "a logo" in regards to a company. And it is kinda true. Even if it is the same company, creative personnel, structure, processes change and therefore the games they make as a result. So Bioware is just a logo, and only because past games you liked had that logo it doesn't mean games now with the same logo are good as well.

Just imagine what could have been. If we got the Dragon Age 4 that we wanted. Something that took the best things from the first three games and stayed true to the franchise in every way. God, I hate the Shit Age that is our current reality.

I'm inclined to believe that we will not see Dragon Age in the immediate future (even a 10 year span) until at some point down the road they go, oh we can pull this out for Nostalgia and people might get their kids into it. 20 years maybe. Unless it's a Remake of Origins whoch would actually sell, I would reckon, albeit they'll probably go the FF7 route, screw it up and people will be pissed.

1 good game. Origins. It had plenty of chances. Let it die. Meanwhile can I get a sequel to VanQuish?

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

How did the one before Veilguard perform? If the IP has genuine power then no, this will not be the end of it. Maybe the last game for a while, but that was kinda the case anyway since the last entry was 10 years ago. In 4 years time, I'm sure EA or whoever owns the IP will relook at it and access whether there's potential. Hell maybe a TV show will get commissioned.

As a non DA fan (dabbled with inquisition) it doesn't feel like the kind of franchise that is unique enough to need to live on in face of more interesting western RPGS on the horizon.
