If Switch doesn’t hit 160mil, this’ll be the real reason:

Switch 1 will be the winner once it passes 156 i dont believe in sonys magic 160+ number

This holiday quarter marks the beginning of "Switch limbo", where some people will think Switch became the best selling system ever and others say its the PS2.  Furthermore, Switch sales are close enough that it's final total has a good chance of landing either below 160m or above 160m.  There is a decent chance the Switch sales will be in limbo forever and there will be a perpetual argument over what the best selling system is.

I think it's fair to say that PS2's sales are in limbo, not Switch's sales. Nintendo has provided clear sales data for the Switch throughout its whole lifecycle. Sony didn't do that with the PS2. The Nintendo Switch will be the best-selling video game of all time considering official information.

If we take in consideration shady numbers, there's a chance the Switch ends up being the second-best selling, falling behind the PS2 with its *insert a number between 155 and 160.63 (.64? 68? I don't even know the max range!) units sold

The picture that was shown last year had a production number of 160,636, 885.

Sonys official website has the PS2 at 160.0m. So another random number that Sony have thrown out in the last year. It's also a bit too rounded at 160 million for my liking. Why Sony couldn't just report their sales every year until the console was discontinued is beyond me.

So PS2 does 1.8m in the last reported year (FY12) but somehow does average of 2.5m in each of the proceeding 2 years after that (well slightly less than 2 years) before being discontinued? What other consoles have done that?

Also Sony didn’t report the supposed 160m total (even to shareholders from what I understand) even though it is a massive achievement for the highest selling console of all time? Doesn’t add up nor that plausible. What am I missing? Are the dates wrong and was it discontinued much later (much much later)?

Correction: PS2 did >1.8mil in FY’12. That figure was likely closer to 3-4mil, though Sony (for whatever reason) chose not to be super precise. I don’t view this as incriminating nor evidence of anything conclusive, and to suggest otherwise just sounds like cope for if Switch doesn’t reach 160mil.

So they just decided to report a false number because it doesnt matter and who cares? That just seems so bizarre to me. Im still considering switch the winner at 156 anyway, the figure was 155 for as long as i can remember. So you can say im coping, and maybe i am, i dont care to think too deeply about it, all i know is that its been 155 forever, these 5 million new consoles have no logical explanation that i can see, so this is just what im going to go with, it just makes the most sense. Switch will officially be number 1 sometime in 2026. There is no way it doesnt make it.

If switch lands in that zone i will unashamedly consider it number 1 even though sonys official number is "160~"

And im prepared to fight that battle in every thread, every comment section, every twitter post until swotch 2 passes "160~"

PS2 lower border is no longer 155. It's anything between 160.0M and 160.63M. Nothing more, nothing less. Of course going from the official information.

The final figure was known to have been millions above 155m for a long time and in fact it was 158.7m on here a few years ago so there's no justification at all for treating 155m as the final total. This Tweet explains why the range was known to have been from the high 150's to the early 160's so the final total being barely above 160m is in line with that.

For those upset about SNY's poor late PS2 hardware reporting, what about MS and their extreme lack and/or total disregard of XB1 or XB Series hardware reporting (in the year 2025)?
