Forums - Nintendo - No 3D Mario on Switch 2 yet seems to have short-circuited a lot of folks

Oh no, you alone have the power to decide what is big based on your personal tastes. And even though Starfox crashed and burned every time since the N64: Star Fox Zero, Star Fox 64 3D. But no, it must be a big because angrypoolman likes it. And everyone who cannot see it's greatness must be purposely obtuse.

As the teenager I am according to you, in the 90s I played Baldur's 1+2. This franchise was abandoned for more than 2 decades, but Baldur's Gate 3 proved it is still a relevant franchise today. So old franchises *can* still be relevant. Starfox got so many chances by Nintendo over the years, but clearly nobody gives a shit anymore. Nintendo is better off torching this franchises and focusing their effort on more relevant - and quite frankly better - franchises. That they keep wasting their developer time on that is impossible to understand.

those star fox games crashed and burned because they were garbage.

i know, i know. who am i to say theyre garbage, another instance of me saying what i like is superior and what everyone else likes doesnt matter blah blah blah

well guess what, theyre garbage. baldurs gate 3 wasnt garbage which is why it was able to re establish relevance again. maybe they should make a star fox that isnt garbage, which is what this remake could have been.

and yes you must be a teenager because you must not remember ten years ago when star fox zero was in development. people were absolutely hyped for that game because it looked like it was going to be a return to form. but no, they decided to fuck with it and now it is generally regarded as more garbage. they havent given star fox a fair shot, they always are doing some bullshit with it, which is why the franchise sucks now. what i am saying is so obvious to anyone who has been around and paid attention just a little bit.

Garbage or not, every Star Fox game after N64 ended up being something fans didn't want or ask for, and either didn't do well critically, came with a hated gimmick, or launched on a dead/dying console (or a combination of two or three of those factors).

Whenever a Star Fox game releases on a console that people actually own (SNES, N64, 3DS) and is a straightforward game with no bullshit gimmicks like being a discount Legend of Zelda or using uncomfortable touch controls with two screens, Star Fox sells reasonably well. Mnemeth compared Star Fox to Fire Emblem to say the latter is a bigger IP, but the best selling FE games have sold comparably to the best selling Star Fox games, only those FE games have the advantage of either being an original game on the Switch and the 3DS, while SF's best games were on older consoles with much smaller install bases. The only time that FE has outsold SF on the same console is Awakening and Echoes on the 3DS, and that was against a remake that had fewer years in between than Star Fox 2026 has after SF3D.

Saying all that to say that Star Fox is as big as Fire Emblem, especially when Nintendo actually gives people a version of SF that people want to play.

maybe since its coming from you and not from me, menhennenhenmnth will finally understand.

but yes what you said is exactly correct. star fox never got a fair shot and if this remake were instead a proper release that made star fox a staple i think we would see a lot less complaining about nintendo's output and then this thread wouldnt exist.

We all know if Nintendo was focusing on Mario and Zelda to sell the Switch 2, we'd be getting complaints about Nintendo only doing that......

People want Nintendo to work with other IPS, and they want Nintendo to only stick to X IPs.

Yup. I feel like the way most people would fully or near-fully satisfied is if their personal favorite IPs all got great titles and accounted for in the first 3 years or less of the system.

That's unrealistic because people have different tastes and there can be long release gaps sometimes.

I was really hoping for a second 3D Mario on Switch given how early Odyssey came out and they could do an asset-reusing sequel like they did with Galaxy. Alas, we got ports and an enhanced port of 3D World with the side course Bowser's Fury. Clearly Nintendo wants plenty of time for 3D Mario to cook and likely had a lot of its team working on DK Bananza. Nintendo is not as reliant on 3D Mario as they used to be.

Super Mario 64 is the flagship Nintendo 64 title in sales, and very possibly the most influential with only Ocarina of Time matching or exceeding its influence.

Super Mario Sunshine was only outsold by Smash and Mario Kart.

Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 sold a lot but were less essential to Wii than Mario Kart and Wii/Mii titles. They have the lowest attachment rate of 3D Mario games.

3D Land and 3D World were successful on their platforms but overshadowed by Mario Kart just to name one IP.

Odyssey was outsold by Breath of the Wild, Smash, Animal Crossing, and Mario Kart. It might even get outsold by Pokémon Generations 8 and 9. Odyssey cracking 30.5 million is a lot, but Switch has sold over 154 million. It's a similar attach rate to 3D Land on 3DS.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 159 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million, then 161 million)

PS5: 116 million (was 105 million, then 115 million, then 122 million)

Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

You wonder why every Star Fox game in the last two decades was bad? Designing a game is hard and circumstances change. Some gameplay ideas that worked in the past become hard to work with modern gamers and modern hardware. Star Fox ever only was successful on SNES and N64. At the time games with similar gameplay ideas thrived on PC: Tie Fighter, Wing Commander. But also on PC these franchises struggle in the last decades. Nintendo gave Star Fox multiple times a serious try. But it never worked out. Fans complain, but they can't design a better game. So did it occur to you, that Star Fox isn't working out anymore?

You say Fire Emblem and Star Fox are on equal footing. But you ignore that franchises rise and fall. The last good selling Star Fox game is 25 years in the past. Since then it struggles to break a million. For Fire Emblem it is the other way around: the franchise sells well since Awakening on the 3DS and the last console Switch holds with Three Houses the best selling title of the series. Star Fox is burnt out and every try so far to rekindle it has failed. Fire Emblem rides high. So yes, these days Fire Emblem is without a doubt the more successful series. Just look at franchise sales per decade. How much did Star Fox games sell in the 10s and 20s? How much Fire Emblem games?

I doubt Nintendo suddenly finds the magic formula to make Star Fox workable again. As I said, other franchises like Tie Fighter and Wing Commander failed as well. Nintendo is just stubborn and keeps trying against better knowledge.

So what do we think how Star Fox will sell? Better than Pokopia? No way. Better than Tomodachi Life? Doubtful. Better than Fire Emblem? Nope. Better than Rhythm Heaven? That actually could be a close fight. The Rhythm Heaven games on Wii and 3DS sold around a million. Star Fox might fall into the same category. So that is the comparison to look for. In the end I assume fans will say that this entry also did something wrong again.

I'd buy that day 1.

Hey, we live in a world where "it's never coming out" games like Metroid Dread, The Last Guardian, Metroid Prime 4, etc exist, I don't think it's that far fetched.

The original was a great game.

Curl, yes system-defining AAA games are important. Without them people are gonna ask whats going on with Nintendo (or any system). Switch ports/DLC, remakes of N64 games, and AA games only go so far.

Fact is it's a no brainer that Nintendo launches their systems with their flagship Mario or Zelda. They've done it every console except GC, WiiU, and S2. Guess how well GC and WiiU did.... so yeah it very much feels like Nintendo was thinking they could live off the hype of the Switch successor for a while this gen and didn't have to get a competent library going to impress people with the Switch 2, or maybe they just really effed up their development schedules. With Zelda obviously years away from coming out, and the last Mario in 2017, it was a crazzzzzzyyyyy decision/screwup to not have Mario come out on launch day like literally every single gamer in the world expected, and now apparently it isn't even coming out until probably 24-30 months after the launch. That's a nuts decision.

But it isn't just about Mario of course. MKW was a cool refit for the MK franchise, but it seems Nintendo stumbled on the execution as lots of people say Nintendo didn't design it will around the open world concept. DKB is so far the lone standout for well regarded big new AAA game a year after launch. What are the other games...a disgrace of a pokemon game that is the embodiment of zero effort, a niche warriors game that's kinda more of the same from the Switch/Zelda, a Metroid Prime game that for many seemed a little outside the mark and didn't live up to the long wait, a good but niche racing game. That was launch year, basically one standout game for the most hyped system in history. That's NOT a good launch year. I'd easily argue N64 had a better launch year than that, coming out in November, and releasing like half a dozen games in that year, and N64 is the most infamous mainstream system in history for not having many games.

And then this year: casual pokemon spinoff, kinda niche yoshi kids game, Mario Tennis like okay that is mediocre AA, and this month Star Fox 64 remake. That's their whole first half of the second year. It's games obviously, it's not "no games", but it is no big games, no AAA games. So 12-13 months in, DKB is still the only well received next gen AAA game on the Switch 2.

So it's not about people saying "i didn't get some specific game...", it's about there being a clear mismanagement by Nintendo of the start of this gen, no Mario at launch was a real wtf is going on with Nintendo moment, and now a year later the mismanagement has proven to be not just the launch period but extending on into the future. Not a single must-have game a year in, only one well received next gen AAA game a year in, and Nintendo mostly filling things out with just re-releasing Switch games you can literally already play on the system, some ports and remakes, and a few AA games.

Now, obviously they'll eventually put big games on the system, OoT is the next one, despite being a remake, but it's just a bad extended start for Nintendo, and the thing that realllllllyyyyyyy makes it stand out is that this is the successor to the most popular system in history and they are absolutely awash in cash from the insanely profitable Switch, so you would have thought Nintendo would have gone all in to keep that success going and make the Switch 2 a must-have console from day 1, instead they pulled the sitting-on-their-hands card and it comes off as like "wtf has Nintendo been doing the last several years when they should have been preparing for this gen??"

Pokemon Pokopia and Mario Kart World are big games that were well received both critically and commercially and were system sellers for a lot of people.

Nintendo's release schedule on Switch 2 is definitely more of a slow burn that say Switch 1, which was heavily front loaded to convince people to jump back on board after the Wii U's failure, but to say there's "not a single must have game a year in" is highly subjective; I'd say MK World, DK Bananza, and Pokemon Pokopia would qualify as must haves for many folks.

You specify "AAA" games, but which Nintendo games can we really call AAA? 3D Mario? Smash Bros? Mainline Zelda? Again it seems to come down to a very limited number of key franchises.
