Forums - Nintendo - No 3D Mario on Switch 2 yet seems to have short-circuited a lot of folks

people have been clamoring for a star fox for decades

LOL, you and your three friends maybe. Good for you, you get one. Look, I am a fan of Pikmin. But I would never claim Pikmin is one of the two biggest games of the year it is in, or a hyped franchise. It is pretty niche. So is Starfox. Again, there is a reason why Nintendo is completely fine with not releasing any for a *decade*.
angrypoolman said:

Big LOL.

but a proper brand new f zero or star fox game would be gigantic

I guess a show looks gigantic to an ant.

i know you are going to pretend to not understand what i mean by gigantic, so i will spell it out for you so we dont have to waste time on that. something like this would be gigantic among those of use who frequent niche video game websites that nobody cares about. it would be huge to us.

I am a fan of niche video games. As I said Pikmin. But even among these there is big niche, small niche and very obscure niche. Starfox doesn't excite many, even on niche hardcore gaming websites. It didn't on WiiU. It didn't on 3DS. Again, Fire Emblem and Xenoblade are even among the niche gaming enthusiasts much, much, much bigger deals.

a brand new star fox game that looked like exactly what they showed? man that right there would be enough to satisfy any of the naysayers who are the topic of this thread.

Again: you can be a fan of Starfox and good for you. But claiming it is one of the two biggest deals this year and complaining I am "purposely obtuse" if I don't get Starfox if you talk "big" and "hyped" is clearly disingenious. Because even as the biggest super-duper mega Starfox-fan you should realize that it is not a big deal for the majority of gamers.
angrypoolman said:

people arent losing it over OoT because they already spent the last month or so doing exactly that because it got leaked. kingdom hearts 4 isnt even published by nintendo, so its completely irrelevant to the topic at hand. youre just throwing shit against the wall to see what sticks at this point. but go ahead and pretend that all of us here should be hyped over a game because itll sell ten million copies and is therefore huge. go ahead and do it.

LOL. Obviously. Big sellers mean that a game is more important to a bigger group of people. I don't demand you should be excited. But if you claim the two biggest releases for the year, then it should be about more than yourself. And I get Zelda. Zelda is a big deal for a lot of people. But not Starfox.

You have to realize that people have different tastes. And Nintendo is looking to satisfy as much people as possible. But you claimed: "we are annoyed because nintendo's two biggest releases for the year". Starfox is not by a long shot. Good that Nintendo is looking for some fans. Attacking me because I don't accept your obviously bad faith argument about what consists of the biggest releases for the year is not making you look good. It is great if you are happy about Starfox. But don't put your preferences on gamers as a whole. We all like different things. The biggest releases of the year are the ones that big groups of gamers wants, the most hyped franchises are the one the most gamers are excited about.

I actually think it's totally fair to insist a system has "no games" if none of them satisfy you. It's not the responsibility of the individual to appreciate everything a company puts out, or to care if others like the line-up. If Nintendo puts out 50 games, and I dislike them all, well, then there really are no games.

Here are the problems, though:

  • A lot of video game enthusiasts don't bother to actually play the games.
  • Video game enthusiasts can be weirdly picky and inflexible, refusing to explore entire genres or balking because of one design decision.

This is totally fine, by the way. But you shouldn't weigh in with such confidence if you're not spending the time and energy to properly experience a game library. And I'm not talking about so-called "casual" players. They're playing their favorites and living their lives. I'm talking about us.

Well, even if nothing excites me it would be unfair to claim "no games". It has no games for me then.

I agree that more of the "gamers" should actually be open to play games.

rational post.

its true. i didnt spend any time on pokopia. it looked like a throw away title at reveal but i have since seen that it has received praise and positive feedback. i can appreciate that and i can recognize it as a quality title.

but its pokopia. the problem that some of us have is that we are being told that its fine that we are getting remakes because nintendo made pokopia and its selling a lot and has good reviews. these remakes look completely kick ass, so its disappointing that something that looks so cool is being used to remake a game rather than making a totally new experience. i dont feel like thats a hard thing to understand, and many here dont. but this thread so far has become a giant circle jerk trashing people with this point of view and saying we should be happy because nintendo made pokopia. it is selling quite well afterall.

It is. Because I don't give a shit about Starfox, but I was highly interested in Pokopia, because I waited for years now for a new Dragon Quest Builders. Square is not doing it, but Nintendo is, and it is great. So I think it is quite rude of you, to apply your preferences to everyone and claim your tastes matter more than everyones elses.

oh ok i see now. more sales means more people like it means its bigger. that makes sense. well ill hold out to see how many sales these games are going to get before i form an opinion next time.

this isnt a fair assessment at all. nobody is demanding that we get anything that you listed. the problem is nintendo padding their first party lineup with remakes.
the switch 2 quite frankly has not built up enough of a library of original titles to get away with filling the year with remakes and switch 2 edition updates. its a very simple concept, and whenever its brought up, it seems to short-circuit the brains of a lot of folks who seem to want to inject way more complexity into this issue than there needs to be.
we are annoyed because nintendo's two biggest releases for the year are remakes, not because we are "trained to have a 3d mario by now." completely unfair.

Here’s the thing though, you’re saying that their “two biggest releases for the year are remakes” that’s just factually wrong. And you seem to be deciding what’s big based on your personal preferences rather than looking at each games sales potential.

Skyward Sword HD-4.15m

To summarize, Nintendo currently has 8 exclusives scheduled to release this year for Switch 2

Mario Tennis, Yoshi, Star Fox & Fire Emblem are all franchises that have sold over 4 million at their best but under 1 million at their worst. Assuming that they all review favorably and since they’re not releasing on a dead/dying console, they should all sell in the 2-5 million range.

As for the other titles, Pokopia did over 4 million in a month and should be an evergreen title. Splatoon Raiders is hard to guess, will it have the same appeal as Splat 2/3 which each did over 12 million or will it be treated like a smaller, side release? Even if it has a large drop from its predecessor, Sports Resort should be a big seller. Considering how well OoT 3D & Link’s Awakening remake each sold over 6 million, a full fledged OoT remake should do even higher. All four of these titles have potential to sell 10+ million.

Which is a fair POV for most casual fans. Some people do literally wait for a new Mario or new Zelda to even decide to buy the console. MPrime4 is not gonna get them hyped. DKBananza is not a deal maker. A new Yoshi game is not in their radar

NS2 has plenty of games, sure, but id be disingenuous if I tell you they are all on the same level. Casual players are married to speciffic IPs

I get where you’re coming from but it’s the equivalent of saying Sony has a bad lineup any year without a brand new God of War or Naughty Dog game or Microsoft has a bad lineup any year without a brand new Halo or Gears game and it doesn’t count if it’s a port, remake, spinoff or is cross-gen.

Oh no, you alone have the power to decide what is big based on your personal tastes. And even though Starfox crashed and burned every time since the N64: Star Fox Zero, Star Fox 64 3D. But no, it must be a big because angrypoolman likes it. And everyone who cannot see it's greatness must be purposely obtuse.

As the teenager I am according to you, in the 90s I played Baldur's 1+2. This franchise was abandoned for more than 2 decades, but Baldur's Gate 3 proved it is still a relevant franchise today. So old franchises *can* still be relevant. Starfox got so many chances by Nintendo over the years, but clearly nobody gives a shit anymore. Nintendo is better off torching this franchises and focusing their effort on more relevant - and quite frankly better - franchises. That they keep wasting their developer time on that is impossible to understand.
