Forums - Nintendo - No 3D Mario on Switch 2 yet seems to have short-circuited a lot of folks

The hardcore Nintendo fan (the ones who use online boards and follow gaming news) is a Mario, Zelda and Smash fan. While they are the most likely to buy anything by Nintendo, the lack of games for those IPs will be met with the impression they are being left behind. Mario Kart theoretically is there to fill the Mario's void, but the way I see it Mario Kart is more a mass-market game than a game sold to Nintendo hardcore fandom

Splatoon, Pokemon and Animal Crossing fandoms are HUGE, and yet they are seemingly distinct fandoms altogether, with their own niche and much less intersecction with the bigger Nintendo core fandom. I think all those are much more likely to describe themselves as "I'm a XXX game fan", than "I'm a Nintendo fan" hence the presence of spin offs of those IPs (Pokopia, Splatoon Raiders) in the upcoming line up matters as much as the next Star Fox or Fire Emblem

this isnt a fair assessment at all. nobody is demanding that we get anything that you listed. the problem is nintendo padding their first party lineup with remakes.
the switch 2 quite frankly has not built up enough of a library of original titles to get away with filling the year with remakes and switch 2 edition updates. its a very simple concept, and whenever its brought up, it seems to short-circuit the brains of a lot of folks who seem to want to inject way more complexity into this issue than there needs to be.
we are annoyed because nintendo's two biggest releases for the year are remakes, not because we are "trained to have a 3d mario by now." completely unfair.

It took long enough for people to come around on this site, but yes, that is exactly what I’ve argued for the past 12 months this system has been on the market. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book and Pokopia are evidence enough that Switch 2 has some incredible first-party gems that dont go by the name of Smash Bros nor Super Mario.

Which is a fair POV for most casual fans. Some people do literally wait for a new Mario or new Zelda to even decide to buy the console. MPrime4 is not gonna get them hyped. DKBananza is not a deal maker. A new Yoshi game is not in their radar

NS2 has plenty of games, sure, but id be disingenuous if I tell you they are all on the same level. Casual players are married to speciffic IPs

The two biggest releases (as in will sell the most) for the year are Pokopia and Switch Sports Resort. Sports Resort I would count as a new title, but as many of the events and Wuhu island itself are returning, some might count it as remake. But however you see Sports Resort, Pokopia is clearly not a remake. So how you get the impression the two biggest titles are remakes?

biggest release in terms of hyped franchises, come on man dont be purposely obtuse. you know what i am talking about, as does literally every other person who is reading this post. we know switch sports resort is going to sell 10 million plus, thats obviously not what im talking about obviously.

Sorry, hyped franchise? What the fuck, this is highly subjective. I saw more reactors losing their shit over Xenoblade and Kingdom Hearts 4, then over OoT. And then is the question what in your mind is the second biggest title. I wrecked my brain, but only if I thought what is the second remake, I got to Starfox. You don't mean Starfox, do you? That is a highly niche franchise, it was not nearly among the biggest in the Direct or for this year. Clearly Pokopia, even as a new IP, is a much bigger deal. But even if you disregard Pokopia as new IP, in no world is Starfox bigger than Fire Emblem. There is a reason Starfox skips every other generation, and really if it does nobody cares. Switch had no Starfox in it's entire lifetime and nobody gave a shit. Fire Emblem has a stable fandom, even if it is not as big as Zelda's.

So if you meant Starfox, then clearly you made a bad faith argument.

people have been clamoring for a star fox for decades, sorry if youre like a teenager or some shit so you may not realize this, but a proper brand new f zero or star fox game would be gigantic. i know you are going to pretend to not understand what i mean by gigantic, so i will spell it out for you so we dont have to waste time on that. something like this would be gigantic among those of use who frequent niche video game websites that nobody cares about. it would be huge to us. a brand new star fox game that looked like exactly what they showed? man that right there would be enough to satisfy any of the naysayers who are the topic of this thread.

people arent losing it over OoT because they already spent the last month or so doing exactly that because it got leaked. kingdom hearts 4 isnt even published by nintendo, so its completely irrelevant to the topic at hand. youre just throwing shit against the wall to see what sticks at this point. but go ahead and pretend that all of us here should be hyped over a game because itll sell ten million copies and is therefore huge. go ahead and do it.

I actually think it's totally fair to insist a system has "no games" if none of them satisfy you. It's not the responsibility of the individual to appreciate everything a company puts out, or to care if others like the line-up. If Nintendo puts out 50 games, and I dislike them all, well, then there really are no games.

Here are the problems, though:

  • A lot of video game enthusiasts don't bother to actually play the games.
  • Video game enthusiasts can be weirdly picky and inflexible, refusing to explore entire genres or balking because of one design decision.

This is totally fine, by the way. But you shouldn't weigh in with such confidence if you're not spending the time and energy to properly experience a game library. And I'm not talking about so-called "casual" players. They're playing their favorites and living their lives. I'm talking about us.

rational post.

its true. i didnt spend any time on pokopia. it looked like a throw away title at reveal but i have since seen that it has received praise and positive feedback. i can appreciate that and i can recognize it as a quality title.

but its pokopia. the problem that some of us have is that we are being told that its fine that we are getting remakes because nintendo made pokopia and its selling a lot and has good reviews. these remakes look completely kick ass, so its disappointing that something that looks so cool is being used to remake a game rather than making a totally new experience. i dont feel like thats a hard thing to understand, and many here dont. but this thread so far has become a giant circle jerk trashing people with this point of view and saying we should be happy because nintendo made pokopia. it is selling quite well afterall.
