That's great and hopefully the goalpost isn't moved again after a certain platform gets closer and closer.

Too bad it won't count. You know, with it being a handheld and all

Lol, notice how that poster is now bending over backwards to dodge them all just being gaming systems according to Sony themselves.

And there we go!
We have a solid range for the Switch to aim for.
I sincerely hope it either blows past that range or comes up short, because if it finishes within that range, we will NEVER hear the end of the debates.

Not to derail this thread too much so I won't post anymore about said poster after this, but you should mention that the Steam Deck really is a PC and that just because you can buy a Linux disc for the PS2/PS3, that doesn't actually make them PCs and they're primarily game consoles. That'll really get them over the edge

I will certainly be celebrating with elation if the certain other platform is able to pull it off reaching the PS2

So no celebration if the PS2 hold it's throne and wins ? How one sided is that ..

I think you'll find I adequately commended the PS2 in its place in history in the event it holds its crown on the first page of this thread!

What was the lifetime sales of the PS2? Not 158m [Update: Between 159.2m and 161.9m]

This is one interesting post from 2018, with some calculations and the famous range 159-162M

Thats an asumption of some random posters. The point is they actually changed an already official confirmed number for ONE DATE TWICE!

in summer 2012 they announced that the PS2 was at 155,1 million units SHIPPED! Thats an ice cold fact! Nobody can question that! In 2019 they changed it to "more than 155 million units sold as of March 31, 2012." Also that is a fact! And its plausible: More than 155 million sold can lead to 155,1 million shipped- a gap of 100k. Old systems don't sell too well so they sell out relativley quickley- fine with that.

But now lets fast forward to november 2024: Sony AGAIN chainged their number: from 155,1 million shipped (2012) over "more than 155 million sold" (2019) to "more than 160 million sold" on the SAME DATE! As of MARCH 31, 2012, the date they announced 155,1 million originally! Anyone sees that and its absolutley incredible that fanboys close their eyes before this fact! If they said march 2013 we could talk about rounding up ok, but NOT announcing 160 million in 2012 but in 2024 when the Switch is probably less than 10 million shy of the PS2's official 155,1 million is just extremly unprofessional and it should have an investigation on Sonys seriosity and if they where hiding any taxes. Its clear they invented a number here just to keep the PS2 Nr.1 because they know like we all do, that the PS5 will never reach the Switch's total!

Most likely the systems Sony had as spare systems and spare parts due to warranty, have now been wrote off from their books. So now the "sold" number is their manufactured number. Basically just what accounting requires in such cases.

But you also have to add in the fact that demo units shipped to stores where also included in this "160,636,000". And demo stations are NOT FOR SALE. Thats fact. Demo stations get sent back to the manufactor. Nintendo does that as well as Microsoft. As someone working in a shopping center i can confirm this. What counts is SHIPPED units. Because they are for retail sale and can be sold through to costumers. In Sony's case with the PS2 these where 155,1 million units! If they add demo stations (please note there where bigger markets even ordering 2 or more of them), the PS2 Slim was added as well so it makes the "unsellable PS2s" number even bigger. So 160 million as a shippment number is far from reality. No matter what Laydon/ Ryan or some Sony guys say.

Bro honestly we may need to just accept this because they'll likely never give us the shipped figure. It might even be intentional on Sony's part. Worried about you know who.

Whom you worry? Sony fans getting a heart attack if they find out that 155,1 million is the final shippment number?😂 How many reviving emergency kits should i order? I mean i love gaming consoles and what would gaming be without our fellow PS fans?😢 I mean i think we agree that shipped to retailers for SELLING THROUGH TO COSTUMERS and shipping to retailers for DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES TO BE SENT BACK AT THE END OF THE GENERATION are 2 different pairs of shoes. Would you consider a car for rent a "sold car"?
