Yeah I think it's not a question of whether XBS consoles will make it to 40 mil, but will they be discontinued before GTA 6 releases? Normally when consoles that sell  like this they're discontinued within a year

If their new consoles are launching sooner rather than later for the 25th anniversary, it is possible it could be discontinued to push for a big launch coinciding with GTA 6's release.

GTA VI is coming out in May, but yeah new generation could start just months later in November of 2026.

Selling less than Switch the month before the Switch gets replaced in its strongest market is the clearest indication yet that Xbox series X/S is basically over.

It will hit 40 million but raising Xbox price will defiantly hurt Xbox sales. I feel like Microsoft is trying to get rid of inventory at this point which is sad because Xbox series consoles is in my top 3 consoles of all time.

I thought xbox series s would've been 200 dollars by now which would be great for those who wanted to play GTA6 at a cheap entry point. Also, they put too much emphasis on cloud gaming which restricted Xbox console sales.

By necessity, if true, they must begin officially talking about the Xbox Next pretty soon.

If not, what do they want to tell everyone who just bought or will be buying X|S in the upcoming months?

And, if true, this would mean that hardware specs got to be set & done already/close to. If PS6 hits in 2028 first, Playstation would clearly have the edge in hardwa power here.

And third - what content is in the works? I claim that every 1st and even 3rd party out there is still working or finalizing their current projects on current-gen dev kits.

Unless Xbox Next is truly going to be only a PC disguised as. Which would make sense trying to answer the content question.

With the current pace, it will be hard to reach 40M. It can end as low as 35-36M depending on how much the baseline of sales will fall in the following month because of the price hike, and also if they announce the next xbox this year.

I bought the Series S just last month and I am very happy with it. I got a deal for brand new, for only 250€.

People are talking about GTAVI but if the next system is running windows then isn't it just not going to be able to play GTAVI?

It won't be limited to PC games.  It will be able to play Xbox games.

It will get to 40 million even if it take 5 years. Even xbox ones and ps4 are still being sold.

Just want to add:

Regardless of which of my opinion or claims above, I overwhelmingly think that this right now is a horrible situation for Xbox as a brand, even worse than any other situation they've been in before.

They want to put out a "biggest generational leap" machine, but nowhere near the horizon I could spot content that would support it.

Unless there are unannounced projects already in the works.

But, from whom?

Fallout or TES6 are years away. Fable is announced as a Series generation game. The same with Gears of War E-Day. The Halo and Forza teams were effected by cuts. The next Doom isn't even announced yet. And Call of Duty is still dragging PS4 and Xbox One - I don't see the capacity at ABK that they could work on three different hardware iterations engine-wise to support One, Series and Xbox Next.

And 3rd parties are currently involved with GTA6, Witcher 4, Wreckfest 2, MGS3 & what not else. All priorized for current-gen by ressources of limited time, personell and money.

I mean, what do I know eventually, right?

Everything's a possibility to be happening right now behind the scenes.

But man, I personally don't see any good for Xbox. All I can think of is Xbox Next will be a PC, plain and simple, and they'll cut off everything else except the biggest ABK and Zenimax IPs and go straight to 100% multiplatform publisher after they've wrapped up the X|S quickly.

Xbox One was discontinued years ago.  The couple of PS4 models that were still being manufactured were discontinued a few months ago.  Those figures are already finite.
