I guess Sony will send more PS5s to Japan when they feel like it.

This week's numbers will be even lower for PS5.

There is zero chance Sony can sell the old model if the new model is on shelves. Japan likes it "small", so getting rid of as many old models as possible is the word. It would be interesting to know if the second hand market sees an increase of PS5 offers at this time. I can imagine a lot of Japanese PS5 owners want the smaller model so they try to sell their "fat" PS5s.

Why would they not make an effort to provide consoles to buy during the biggest launch of the year? It pure self deprecation and its annoying to watch.

Gonna be moving my 4.4m target for Switch down to 4.3m at this point. Is it a 53 week year? If so it should still be able to hit 4.3m I think unless holiday sales are very low.

Sony does not distribute consoles on weekly basis. They start with their quarterly projections and may shift (in a worst case scenarios only) some numbers on a monthly basis (1-2 months ahead). Anything else is financial suicide as far as shipping costs are concerned.

That Sony runs out of old consoles the week ahead of when the new console models board the shelves shows they have a pretty accurate idea of what to ship where and when. Again, any old models in Japan from next week on are dead, unsellable units.

When looking at the Switch's numbers for previous years, I wondered how higher did go the strongest weeks for hardware there.

So here they are top 10 (according to VGChartz data):

  1. week ending 22.12.2005 - 603,201 (NDS)
  2. week ending 22.12.2011 - 497,223 (3DS)
  3. week ending 21.12.2006 - 492,301 (NDS)
  4. week ending 02.12.2004 - 458,825 (NDS)
  5. week ending 20.12.2012 - 422,566 (3DS)
  6. week ending 31.12.2005 - 410,218 (NDS)
  7. week ending 17.12.2005 - 398,435 (NDS)
  8. week ending 19.03.2020 - 380,279 (NSW)
  9. week ending 26.02.2011 - 374,164 (3DS)
  10. week ending 17.12.2011 - 372,281 (3DS)

So, a few points out from this:

  • Switch may become the best selling system in Japan, despite having only 1 week in the TOP 10 strongest weeks there.
  • Switch having the best selling non-holiday week there, beating it's own launch week and 3DS launch week too, as well as every other holiday week it had, and most of the 3DS holiday weeks as well.
  • There haven't been a console topping 400k weekly since 2012, which doubts how big chance there is for future consoles doing the same achievement, let alone reaching 500 or 600k weekly.

Switch has now sold over 31 Million units.

Could someone explain to me why PS5 sales have been so low in recent weeks?

PS5 Slim releases in Japan on Nov 10 and Sony stopped shipping the old models there so that only Slims would be available on Nov 10.

I find it hilarious that people have the Slim in their homes here as indicated by the leaked photos and comparisons but yet they somehow can't get any Slim units to Japan for 2 more weeks.

All this s**t with the Slim replacement should be done in the PS3'09 way of Slim releasing ..
They announce it on August 18th, and they released it 2 weeks later on 1st of september.
Price cut asside, the FAT models had exactly 2 weeks on the market where they were the only models you can pick up, and there was no such problem as who will get them, because they just price cut them too, 299$ as of august 18th (most stores even throw one or two games for free or second dualshock even). So whoever didn't want to wait, or just liked the FAT model more (like me) picked up one, in the two weeks leading to September 1st (launch of the Slim).
There weren't any problems about stock neither in Japan, nor in US.
Is it so hard to do the same replacement now Sony ?
I am sure PS2 slim release was about the same thing. PS4 Slim as well.
