Switch vs DS Sales Comparison in Japan - September 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in December 2004 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

Switch Vs. DS Japan:

Gap change over last 12 months: 2,237,781 - Switch

Total Lead: 1,949,814 - DS

Switch Total Sales: 30,820,552

DS Total Sales: 32,770,366

September 2023 is the 79th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch has outsold the DS by 320,385 units when you align the launches.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 2.24 million units. The DS is currently ahead of the Switch by 1.95 million units.

The 79th month for the Switch is September 2023, while for the DS it is June 2011. The Switch has sold 30.82 million units, while the DS sold 32.77 million units during the same timeframe. The DS sold current Switch sales in month 69.

The DS has sold 32.99 million units lifetime in Japan. The Switch is currently 2.17 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Japan - September 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 306,470 - PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: 498,849 - PS5

Total Lead: 211,750 - PS5

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 4,456,328

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 4,244,578

September 2023 is the 35th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 306,470 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 498,849 units. The PS5 is currently ahead by 211,750 units.

The 35th month for the PS5 in Japan is September 2023, while for the PS4 it is December 2016. The PS5 has sold 4.46 million units, while the PS4 sold 4.24 million units during the same timeframe. The PS4 sold current PS5 sales in month 36.

The PS4 crossed 5 million in month 41, 6 million in month 47, and 7 million in month 53. The PS4 has sold 9.65 million units to date. The PS5 is currently 5.19 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4 in Japan.

Switch is gaining on the DS really fast.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in Japan - September 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 in Japan, as well as looking at lifetime original Xbox sales and Xbox One sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in Japan in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in Japan in December 2005. The original Xbox launched in Japan in February 2002 and the Xbox One in September 2014.

Gap change over last 12 months: 160,713 - X360

Total Lead: 258,992 - X360

Xbox Series X|S Total Sales: 515,536

Xbox 360 Total Sales: 774,528

September 2023 is the 35th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for in Japan. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox 360 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 1,654 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 160,713 units. The Xbox 360 is currently ahead by 258,992 units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 515,536 units in 35 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 774,528 units. Month 35 for the Xbox Series X|S is September 2023 and for the Xbox 360 is October 2008.

The Xbox 360 crossed one million units in month 40 and 1.5 million units in month 67. The Xbox 360 sold 1.66 million units lifetime. The Xbox Series X|S is 1.14 million units behind lifetime Xbox 360 sales.

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Xbox 360.

The Xbox 360 launched in the US in November 2005, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

September 2023 is the 79th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in the US. During the latest month, the Nintendo Switchhas outsold the Xbox 360  by 10,721 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Nintendo Switch by 1.95 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the Xbox 360 by 7.63 million units.

The 79th month for the Nintendo Switch is September 2023 and for the Xbox 360 it is May 2012. The Switch has sold 42.19 million units, while the Xbox 360 sold 34.56 million units during the same timeframe. The Xbox 360 sold current Switch sales in month 98.

The Xbox 360 sold 43.75 million units in the US during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 1.56 million units to outsell the Xbox 360 in the US.

Switch vs Wii Sales Comparison in Europe - September 2023 (Final Update)

This monthly series compares the aligned European sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Wii.

The Wii launched in Europe in December 2006, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. Wii Europe:

Gap change in latest month: 185,437 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 3,696,556 - Switch

Total Lead: 928,902- Switch

Switch Total Sales: 33,333,078

Wii Total Sales: 32,404,176

September 2023 is the 79th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Europe. During the latest month, the Switch outsold the Wii by 185,437 units.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the Wii by 3.70 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the Wii by 928,902 units.

The 79th month for the Nintendo Switch is September 2023 and for the Wii it is June 2013. The Switch has sold 33.33 million units, while the Wii sold 32.40 million units during the same timeframe.

This month the Nintendo Switch outsold lifetime sales of the Nintendo Wii in Europe. The Switch's 33.33 million units sold is above the 33.12 million the Wii has sold lifetime in Europe.

That is another sales comparison complete! Switch vs Xbox 360 in the US and Switch vs DS in Japan are likely the next two to finish in the coming months. With specific countries/regions comparisons finishing up I would like to add new ones in countries/regions rather than worldwide for now. 

Some possible ideas:

• Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox One in the US
• Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox One in Europe
• Switch vs DS in the US

We have PS5 vs PS4 in the US and Europe already going, so doing the same for Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox One makes sense to me. And Switch vs DS in the US is really the last possible Switch comparison I could add as we don't have monthly estimates for the PS2.
