| Soundwave said: Yeah I think Sony needs to show receipts for that 160 number too. Things like store kiosk units, promotional units, maybe even defective units could/likey are part of that 160+ number as it's (well) a production number. It likely encompasses as PS2 unit produced for any reason, that's not the same as units shipped to a retailer for sale. That's not the same as a sold through or shipped number. Either show a sell through number or the last known shipment number is the number to beat. The fact that they're using a "production number" is a pretty clear sign they are being deceptive. They know damn well the final actual shipment total for the PS2, so why not just share that number instead of this number. They don't want to, because that shipment number is under 160m IMO. They are scared the Switch 1 is going to beat that number. There's no other reason to withhold that. |
They haven't said produced, but sold. " store kiosk units, promotional units, maybe even defective units " shouldn't be counted as a sold, therefore they are likely not counted towards that number. I don't know where you all saw production number. Yes Shawn Layden confirmed production number of 160.63M, but the 160M+ number Sony themselves announced is not production number, according to them, it's sold. So all those kiosks, promo units and etc. should be in those under 630k left to 160.63M. Other than that I agree, they should've been more transparent about the figures, since the last shipment update was from March 2012 with 155M. They should've came out after the quarter ending March 2013 ended, and said 160M and that's it.

I dont know why so many people believed that clearly fake "last PS2 sold" pic that says the PS2 sold 160.63M sold.
Idc if Shawn Layden "confirmed" it. Have a feeling hes just talking out of his ass to seem more involved with a popular console's history. That print on the last PS2 sold looks like a cheap sticker someone made in 10 minutes and called it the "last ps2 ever sold, 160.63M sold". It also seems very odd and out of character for a company to do this or to care about doing something like this, the PS2 was far from a priority for sony at all during its discontinuation im 2013 to make sure to say this was the last ps2 ever sold.
All we know is that the PS2 did sell more than 160.00M, and likely less than 161M. We dont know the exact number anything beyond that scope.
The real answers is that Sony gave us such a vague number so that for all eternity the internet will be doomed to conspiracy theories all the while someone at Sony is laughing while he's drinking his coffee or maybe 奶茶 hahaha

The final manufacturing closed nine years ago: 82.5MM+!
Not bad, lil buddy. 🎮💙 pic.twitter.com/obYnKFbU9w
Not out of character at all because they did it for the PSP.
It also doesn't look like a cheap sticker -- it's clearly a protection plastic above the print.
I don't know if this is the real final number or not but I do agree the total is bellow 161m, otherwise they would've just said "more than 161 million consoles sold".

It'll happen
@angrypoolman I agree. I still believe Switch 1 has enough in the tank to get it to 161m. Probably would take until around 2028. I think a big factor will be whether or not Gen 10 is a Switch 1 & Switch 2 Edition type of release, which I think is possible.

The PS2's "more than 160.0m" figure is final, so the theoretical maximum is 160,099,999. Which means that Switch hitting 160.1m is good enough for 100% certainty.
160.63m as final production figure for the PS2 doesn't create additional ambiguity because, for example, the PS3's production exceeded 88m, yet only 87.4m were shipped. Production figures include units that were used as demo stations or used to replace broken units that couldn't be repaired anymore.
Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.
