I'm starting to think my physical game collection may be my single most profitable investment

Also, for those looking for physical PS3 games ahead of the store closure, several PS3 reprints are currently on sale at VGP: https://videogamesplus.ca/collections/ps3-holiday-restock

I have a feeling people aren't gonna move on from this like Sony is hoping. Even with the big Xbox layoffs today I still see a lot of talk about this.

It has already generated more attention than the first GTA VI announcement on twitter, many companies not even related to gaming at taking jabs at Sony, it is already something huge, IMO even bigger than the XBO DRM plans reveal, I don't think simply waiting quietly is going to work out for them, yeah.

They'll have to double down or backtracked soon enough, and if they double down it's getting worse.

I don't think even the massive PSN hack was as bad for Playstation image as that announcement 5 days ago. Their image is on a all time low as far as I can see.

I literally received a copy of that game today lol

I still can't believe the nerve and idiocy of Sony choosing to announce this before Microsoft. I'm sure them goofs didn't expect a fraction of the outrage they're getting. Good 😋

I don't see them backtracking, but they'll probably announce some major improvements in digital ownership and refund policies, and may release a PS6 disc drive add on for backwards compatbility and give PS5 an extra couple of years of disc support. Best case scenario is they will allow expensive limited print games for collectors. It's still shocking to me that they chose this over making a price gap between physical and digital like Nintendo. The outrage could have easily been avoided by a move like this. These suits' brains are wired differently!

I'd like to say that there's no way they're that foolish and out of touch to not expect a massive backlash over this but the original plan for the Xbox One already showed that there's truly no limit to how out of touch the suits can be over stuff like this so that is for sure a possibility. I don't have the numbers they do but it really seems like a high risk low reward business move to do this now instead of waiting another 5 years or so before stopping disc production. I just can't see how any benefits they'll get from doing it surprisingly soon are worth the major brand damage that'll make selling the PS6 even harder and is causing some Playstation super fans to cancel their PS+ subs.

Yeah I don't think the suits anticipated the backlash being quite this strong; you'd think a major console player would be aware of how many people feel about this issue, but as has already been stated, plenty of moves over the years from all three console makers have demonstrated an astounding lack of touch with their audience.

At this point can we call this the biggest uproar in PS history, or is the 2005-2006 PS3 controversy still bigger?

The 2011 PlayStation Network outage uproar is probably to date the biggest uproar and lowest point. Sony ended up ok to say the least for the rest of PS3's life and has done well since but that was low.

As far as longer lasting problems, the PS3 reveal, Concord in 2024 (the failure of betting too big on live service), and now this in 2026 are probably the other biggest uproars.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 159 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million, then 161 million)

PS5: 116 million (was 105 million, then 115 million, then 122 million)

Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

I think one of the reason for lets indeed call them "the suits" they did not expect the backlash to be this big is because in their eyes their DATA says 85%+- buya digital, when now we all know that number included:
DLC
AD ONS
FREE GAME DOWNLOADS
DIGITAL ONLY GAMES
I would not be surprised if the actuall physical to digital ratio is 30+% thats a LOT of physical games.

Many people will think:

If PS6 is $1000..

..But if I can trade in a PS5 for $400, then it's ok-ish....

..But if PS6 has no disc drive, I cannot trade in PS5......

..So it's $1000 then. To much....
