Forums - Sales Discussion - December Circana (NPD) 2024 Thread + Predictions

As expected, Switch goes back to being down considerably in December YOY (almost 500k), despite some people expecting it to be flat just like November. It was just an outlier month in an otherwise down overall year. Which is absolutely normal of course. Still respectable numbers for it.

PS5 is slightly down, and XBSX is around 50% down YOY, man that's a lot of a drop for a 4 year old console..

The thing is..... even getting a Series X is hard in alot of places.

There are tons of people reporting they can barely even find one, if they wanted to buy one.
From various places around the world.

Its gotten to the point, windowscentral made article about it.
Not being able to buy a product, leads to worse sales.

Elden Ring is a boss.  It's been almost 4 years and it is still charting both in the December charts and YTD.  Yeah, it got DLC this year, but Mario Kart got DLC the previous two years.  Basically Elden Ring is an evergreen now like Mario Kart or some other major Nintendo evergreen.  That is a hell of a win for From Software.

Thats more than stable for the Switch considering the circumstances! Xbox is a catastrophy! If i made a console it would outsell it! 😉 PS5 down -18% despite the Pro and GOTY Astro is quite surprising (no the price hike is no reason for that!) I think Sony has to bring the PS6 earlier than planned to counter the Switch 2, late rumors and the fact Sony a year ago said they where past the first part of the gen goes in line with that! Thats quite telling.  Anything later than a 2028 launch would be suicide for Sony if they want to compete with the Switch 2. I think 2027 would be a wise decision...

PS5 is tracking 7% higher than the PS4 in lifetime unit sales through Dec 2024. The Xbox Series are trailing the Xbox One by 18% comparatively.

This is also the third consecutive year where a Sony first party title made the top 5 best selling games list. I don't think Ghost will be able to do that next year, but it could be a top 10 seller. GT7 continues to be evergreen.

Astro Bot had a good holiday season!

Finished 8th for the best selling games of the month and 5th on PlayStation. It hasn't dropped out of the charts since it came out.

(Haven't posted in ages so forgive me for my lack of keeping up to date but...)

Pretty crazy that all 3 consoles posted north of 1m sales/mo in Dec. Good showing for all 3. I am somewhat surprised that XSX isn't further behind than it is.

I'll have to re-acquaint myself with the charts as I haven't been looking at this data in ages, as I'm in a different industry now. Are they releasing much data on content anymore, or is that still shrouded in mystery?

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Looks like November was an anomaly for the Switch and to a lesser extent the PS5 and that's a big oof for the Xbox Series. Also the digital console ratio being basically the same is pretty interesting. I would've expected it to be higher for Xbox due to the Series S but seems a cut down console just isn't that appealing despite the low price.

Software data is even more closed off than before. Hardware, we do what we can with the data we are able to collect. We now post hardware estimates monthly rather than weekly as some data we collect only comes in once per month. That and I was getting burnt out updating the hardware every single week.

How are you feeling now @trunkswd ?

Firstly I missed the weekly updates, however one thing I didn't realize in the beginning - the accurate data. So with the monthly updates it is way more accurate and less adjustments needed than weekly updates where those aren't so accurate, and why post something if you need to adjust it every time later.
