Forums - Sales - October 2024 VGChartz Estimates Thread - Worldwide Estimates Out Now

Welcome to the October 2024 VGChartz estimates thread, which includes the dates from October 6 to November 2. The articles breaking down October 2024 estimates will be posted in this thread.

You can go to the front page of the site and use the drop down to see the different weekly and monthly sales.

VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.

This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

This was a relatively good month for 2024 standards. The PS5 didn't do much worse than the PS4 did in its equivalent month and only being about 12% down YoY is actually really good considering last October had Spider-Man 2 and at least some portion of people will have been holding off for the Pro. It should continue being down compared to 2023 overall but there's a chance November is about flat and it'll be its 2nd best holiday season yet to end the year well.

Xbox Series was unsurprisingly the weakest link but it held up a lot better than September and should hopefully be able to end the year ok though starting next month the comparison with the Xbox One is gonna get a lot more rough until GTA 6 comes out. It being the only one to be up compared to last month might indicate BO6 on Game Pass having a notable impact but the new models probably helped some so it's difficult to say.

And the Switch held up decently well thanks to it holding up better than usual in Europe though the US is pretty over the Switch at this point. Overall it's final holiday season of note should be decent but strong for its age.

Especially November is the hardest to be flat, December is easier, for the PS5 in particular. Remember last year how PS5 skyrocket there and made 1.75M in November, which was about 3rd or 4th place of all time I think ? but then it declined in December with only 1.2M ? Which is not typical since almost always December is stronger than November. So I think the December is the month where it has a chance to be flat or even some chance to beat it. But November will be very hard to replicate again.

Edit* Pardon me, I don't know why I though you talked about Europe .. Yes worldwide with the US being strong PS5 may be flat for November or even December which was just 250k more. The question is will US this year compensate for the bigger numbers Europe had last year in November ?

The PS5 Pro is apparently having a nice launch so that could make November be flat I think. December will be trickier though since the legs of the PS5 Pro probably won't be as good as the PS4 Pro.
